About the Sheep Creek Trailhead
Sheep Creek Trailhead, located in Bayfield, Colorado, United States, is a popular park known for its Piedra River Hot Springs. The hot springs are considered one of the easier primitive hot springs to access in Colorado, making it a perfect destination for a quick afternoon getaway. The trailhead is about 20 miles west of downtown Pagosa Springs, offering a relatively secluded experience compared to other hot springs in the area.
The hike to the hot springs is a 2.8 mile out and back trail, starting at nearly 7,500 ft and descending to 6,880 ft where the springs are located. The trail follows the Sheep Creek Trail until reaching the river, with some spots that can be confusing if not paying attention. Once at the hot springs, visitors can enjoy multiple pools along the river, each with varying temperatures depending on the flow of the river.
The hot springs are cleaner than others in the area, with clear water and visible bottoms of the pools. However, there is unfortunately some trash left behind by previous visitors, so it's important for guests to practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out any garbage. Despite this, the atmosphere at Piedra River Hot Springs is described as super chill, with friendly locals often frequenting the area.
After enjoying the hot springs, visitors should be prepared for a steep climb back to the trailhead, with over 600 feet of elevation gain in just over half a mile. Overall, Sheep Creek Trailhead and Piedra River Hot Springs offer a relaxing and scenic experience for those looking to unwind in a natural setting.
Reviews of Sheep Creek Trailhead
"This was an amazing hike. We had so much fun. And then to find the hot springs made the hike even better."
"Great hike and awesome reward of hot springs. If you hike in second part of the day recommending to have a flashlight"
"This was rough going down hill the whole 1 1/5 hike in and then the same steep incline going back out. Its not a leisurely hike. Also, the springs were hard to find. You stay to the right the entire time. The trail becomes quite narrow and steep, slippery too. Bring water. It's a steep trail. Springs in town we're free and easy to find."
"Sheep Creek Trailhead. Great place to check out! About a 4 mile round trip from the parking area. The 2 miles out is very easy and all down hill! Make sure you stay to the right it all splits to make it to the hot springs! If you are only headed to see the creek you can expect a mile walk down. Very steep heading back up but i made it so you got it!"
"Nice hike and beautiful access to river and natural hotsprings. It was a little steep in some spots but just made it that much more worth it."
