"Alta is a wonderful place to visit. There's so much history here. It was easy to get caught up in taking photos of the wonderful historical buildings and the amazing view. The road is tricky. I was driving a four-wheel drive SUV, and kept telling my wife that there was no way that we could have made it in our other car, which is a prius. The joke was on me though, after we'd been there for half an hour walking around seeing the sights and taking photos, somebody drove by us in a Toyota prius. Go figure! The Drive up the mountain is about 4 mi, and took us easily 20 minutes. It may have been closer to a half hour. I took it really slowly and carefully. In my opinion, it's worth it. I'm going to post some of my photos. Please take a look."
"Beautiful area with an awesome ghost town, great hiking trails, camping, beautiful lakes, and great views. The road up is an easier 4x4 trail. Our Jeep Grand Cherokee had no problems getting there. It's a great area to spend some time and there were several people there the afternoon we visited."
"Part of the road up is Difficult - the first part of the road to get has no guardrails, no trees to stop your car from going strait down. If another car comes, One of you will have to back up until the other one can get by and in some spots it’s impossible for more than one car to get through. After that first mile or so it’s not bad, Can be white knuckling. The ghost town is cool, but after that brief glimpse, keep on going to the beautiful lake and trails. There’s the Perfect picnic spot."
"Absolutely beautiful but very difficult road to get there. 4×4 recommended and skill required. Did it on a motorcycle because once started there was no turning around lol. Great fun!"
"A lot of the buildings have collapsed, but what's still there is pretty cool to see. Keep going up and there's a beautiful lake and camping area. The road up isn't exactly car friendly, I'd want something with a little more ground clearance than my Grand Prix had as I scraped the bumper and the underside of it more than a few times. Definitely worth the time to go see and or stay if you're camping"
