Reviews of Roots Cafe
"I had a mixed plate that had Teriyaki Chicken, Garlic Shrimp, Macaroni Salad with rice. Had the Kailua Pork. So Ono. Also we had two entree Teriyaki Chicken & Garlic Shrimp."
"Had the mixed plate, Kalbi and garlic shrimp, and first of all, the portions were very generous! I could have easily shared that with another adult. The shrimp were huge and the Kalbi was so tender; seasonings and sauces were remarkable! Nothing typical, definitely deliciously unique flavors."
"We ate here a few weeks ago and enjoyed the food. For anyone who has been in the Springs for a while, you likely know of Taco Del Rey, which is the building that this little Hawaiian place is now in (Taco Del Rey was in this tiny little building for something like 45 years). Parking is the usual, miserable, metered downtown parking - I avoid going downtown whenever possible because I can't stand it...but that's no fault of the restaurant. The building is absolutely tiny, so seating is extremely limited and simple (most of their business is carry-out, I'm sure), but what was there was clean and tidy. The food was good and cooked to order by the owner. My wife saw a certain kind of rice on a review and asked what that was and we found out that that was a "hidden menu" item that they have!! (A little bit of In And Out Burger style going on, there!) I don't know if it's always available and probably not supposed to get out into public, but the owner was willing to make that rice for my wife and she loved it - a huge step over basic white steamed rice. I had the Kalua Pig, which is what I almost always order at Hawaiian places, and it was very good. My wife had Kalbi and it was also delicious. The Spam Musubi was ok, but not my kind of thing (I thought the seaweed wrap was fishy-tasting), and we were a little let down by the dessert - we got their last piece of Choc-mac Banana Bread and we felt it was a oittle dry and lacking in flavor. Anyway, I love little family-run places and this one is doing a great job with theirs. I wish them all the success and we'll certainly be back again!"
"The service in this spot is fantastic! It's a bit of a small shop but it's efficient and busting with flavor. I enjoyed this place so much from first entering. They do offer carryout and dine in, just know that the dining area is a little small inside but there's also a few tables outside if that's your style. The Loco moco was delicious! That egg and the patty is homemade and you can tell! The gravy was so good. I also tried the honey garlic chicken! Which was served in the most delicious sauce. This was the special the evening I visited. They make a new house special every few days and this one did not disappoint! Not to mention that mac salad!"
"The food is AWESOME. If you like the true tastes of Hawaii this is where it's at. While we were eating Mama D (Owner) took the time to come ask us how everything was. She has a real passion and love for the food she serves. It is a family business and they make you feel like you are a welcome new member. My wife and I can't wait to go back again; even tho we live in the NE side of town, it is well worth the drive."
