"Attitude matters--especially in those you entrust with your health care--and patient care involves much more than just the doctor's knowledge and skill. A respectful, caring staff is essential; unfortunately, that was not our experience with Dr. Abrahamson. My husband's chiropractor suddenly closed his practice, and he was referred to Dr. Abrahamson. He made an appointment, presented our insurance card--and was told AFTER his visit that the doctor did not participate with our carrier. We were billed for the entire amount. When I called to discuss this, I was initially told "that doesn't sound like how we usually do it" and was then asked "What do you want me to do about it?" I explained that I was willing to pay our co-pay and was told someone else would call me back. Several days later, I received a call from another of Dr. Abrahamson's office staff. She began the conversation with "So you don't want to pay your bill?" I asked if I could explain the situation. Eventually, she admitted the failure to inform my husband of their non-participation with our insurance carrier upon check-in was an oversight. However, the entire bill was still my responsibility. When I replied that it didn't seem right that we had to pay for their mistake, she offered to "take twenty dollars off" the bill. Obviously, I am not pleased with the outcome, but if I had been treated with a bit of respect, perhaps an apology for the oversight, or maybe even a kind word, I would have left the situation much more satisfied. At the very least, I would feel better about paying the bill. It is important for providers to have competent, respectful staff to assist their patients--and Dr. Abrahamson was not able to offer that for us."
