"Had a nice stay. Hotel room was clean, quiet & no-frills. We came to the University for a visit & the room put us smack dab in the middle of the campus.. The hotel was a short walk from the quad & the downtown area. to be clear, it wasn’t the Ritz or the Plaza hotel, but we were out and about all day, so our room was just a place to lay our heads @ night. One warning! BEWARE the hotel’s tap water! I know it sounds ridiculous, but the sink/shower water in our room was legitimately caustic. I made the unfortunate mistake of using the hotel water for brushing my teeth. After taking a small gulp of (cold) water to swish my mouth out and BOOM, I was hit with a taste I could only compare to something like diluted rubbing alcohol. By the time I spit the water out, both the inside of my mouth and my whole tongue were burned. My daughter believed I was joking around with her, took a sip of her own. and in doing so, confirmed my findings. I don’t know why… It’s possible the pipes are bad, but I know this for certain…there was no way in he#l we were going near that shower! As an aside, it was so bad that we added, “How is the water” to our list of important questions asked on/off campus. For the record, the water on campus & in Iowa City is reportedly “normal.” So… I would still stay at the Iowa House Hotel while visiting U of Iowa campus. The value was good, rooms were clean, it was VERY quiet and location was perfect… As long as you bring lots of bottled water, you’ll be fine."
"Disappointed is the best word I can use to describe my experience. The room was more like a poorly renovated dorm room and seemed very outdated. Having been in a spectators booth in the stadium, I expected the same quality of accommodations at the hotel. For the same price, I could've stayed at an equally good location without any of the disappointment. These are just a few of the negatives: -They double charged me for the room. When I asked about why they double charged, they said the refund was processing but did not explain why I was double charged in the first place. We checked out on a Saturday morning and by Monday morning I still have not received a refund for the charge. -The room was incredibly small and the bathroom was not much better -Toiletries provided were not of great quality. -We were expected to bag and remove our own linens. -Breakfast included left a lot to be desired. With so many on campus dining facilities, I expected at least some type of hot breakfast option. The breakfast room was not staffed and when things ran out, you were just out of luck. These are a few of the positives: -Location & view -Good coffee was available in the rooms and at the breakfast. -Quiet Overall, I was disappointed but I guess that's what I get for having high expectations for a hotel on the campus of a public university."
"I've stayed here multiple times, and it's always great. The location is ideal, and the parking is free. You feel like a part of campus! A nice view of the river is a bonus. The mattresses are not the greatest, but we're spoiled at home lol."
"Dirty room, paint falling off walls, floor had many stains in it, and the air conditioner did not work-turned it all the way down and the room didn’t get cold nor was there any air movement. Very stuffy in the room. Hallways of the hotel had stains on the floor and walls. Smelled disgusting. The breakfast options were fine but the tables were dirty."
"I've stayed here four times in the past year. The hotel has a very nice old school charm and a nice homey ambience. Located next to the peaceful Iowa River which is a tributary of the mighty Mississippi. It's located inside the student union so it's really convenient for families checking out the campus It's just an uphill walk past the old capital to the bustling college downtown scene with great restaurants, shops and bars. The included free parking in a multilevel parking garage just a stones throw away is a great perk since parking can be difficult in Iowa City. The staff is always incredible, cheerful and helpful. The included continental style breakfast is generous, fresh and well stocked. The rooms are always clean and cozy. I honestly can't imagine staying anywhere else in Iowa City."
