Reviews of The Gardens of Cedar Rapids
"A prime example of trying to do too much with too little. The people are great and work hard but they're just isn't enough to go around and the quantity and quality of the services lack because of that."
"I worked there today as an agency nurse and I want to thank the staff for making me feel like I was part of the team and the CNAS were amazing!"
"Thank God my mom only spent a month there!! I had to request the toilet be cleaned because of feces on it (next morning still not cleaned) the "living room" furniture had spilled drinks on the chairs for weeks. The staff fought all the time. They (2 of them) almost dropped my mom transferring her, I ran in to help. Jenna the director sends threatening letters regarding a bill but won't return 3 messages or 2 written requests to get an itemized bill for it. And there is more....."
"I (and my adopted nephew) chose this place to take care of my brother-in-law who came to them from Iowa City Hospital "improving." He was a tall man (6 ft.) and they didn't have a bed to fit him or a wheelchair that fit him. They never did anything about his too small bed and it took about three weeks for an acceptable wheelchair that fit him to get there. His son bought him some t-shirts and marked them with his dad's name -- when they were laundered, he was told they "lost them" (he later saw someone walk by the room wearing one of the t-shirts). To this day, we have not received the t-shirts. His son was told that he would have to buy his own distilled water for his father's Cpap machine - they didn't supply it (this is incomprehensible with all the profit these places make when someone has good insurance. In addition John, and his son, were told no one there was trained in how to clean it. The Cpap machine, which was used daily, remained uncleaned for over a month. After John's death, an employee packed up the Cpap and gave it to John's son. Then, they started calling myself and John's son to get the Cpap machine back stating it was theirs. MOST DISTURBING OF ALL was that my brother-in-law declined and his son was called to come in and sit with him. At that time, they didn't give his son ANY information about the worse case scenario (death) happening. No one came in the room to see if his son needed anything (beverage, counselling, etc.). When my brother-in-law finally died, at 8 p.m., his son was told "You need to make arrangements to get him out of the facility before morning when the other clients wake up." His son asked for names of places he should call and was told it was his choice, but that it had to be that evening (no list given). Both of us were on the telephone FOR HOURS trying to find a funeral parlor to come and get John (brother-in-law). We were quoted from $1800 - $2500 (for a simple cremation -- no service or viewing) and one person even demanded cash. Again, this was between 9 p.m. and midnight. John's son sat in the room with his dead father for hours trying to make arrangements. THE FACT THAT THE GARDENS DIDN'T HAVE THE PROPER FACILITIES TO (FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD), STORE THE BODY UNTIL ARRANGEMENTS CAN BE MADE IS HORRIFIC. The pressure put on John's son, at his time of passing, was enormous and unkind. He wasn't even given a list of funeral homes to call. If I had a pet rat, I wouldn't arrange for it to go to The Gardens. HEED my message and DO NOT take a loved one to this place."
