"Tamara Halbersma was NOT helpful. Not only did she “forget” to call in my medications, forcing me to wait an extra day, but she also called in not one, but TWO meds that would lower my seizure threshold after I told her more than once I am epileptic and she got snippy with me. Very very very disappointed. But I have to say Kenneth Cameron is probably one of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure of talking to which is why I’m giving three stars. Tamara, not so much."
"This was my first experience with a mental health crisis that I just couldn’t handle and of course, on my birthday. I showed up right before close (for therapists/medication as the crisis center is 24 hours) and by the time my paperwork was completed, it was after 5 so the therapists had gone home. I did talk with a few nurses and techs and EVERYONE was very kind. they even offered me CAKE since it was my birthday. I got to do a zoom call with a psychiatrist to prescribe medicine to help with my anxiety and sleep. I stayed overnight as I wasn’t sure how i’d do alone (I’m estranged from family & have no friends in iowa making me fairly lonely which is why i work 3 jobs. I rather stay busy than stuck in my head!) Anyways, the WHOLE staff the evening of 1/5/24 and morning/afternoon of 1/6/24 was amazing. I was worried i’d feel like a burden or they’d roll their eyes like not another person coming but they didn’t make me feel bad at all. They made sure I was well taken care of and even cracked jokes to try & get me to smile. The therapist came in the morning where talking to him helped calm some of my leftover nerves. He was very understanding and helpful and even made sure to relate to me on a certain level which made me feel better. They made sure to let me know to come back as needed to talk to a therapist esp during my transition to a new therapist. All in all, Great place. The environment was warm and welcoming. The area I stayed at was warm and clean. The TV is a little small but that’s okay ;) Definitely recommend anyone worried about seeking help to try this urgent care for mental needs (it also keeps the ER less clustered and is USUALLY cheaper on most insurance (at least with mine). I hope things get better but unfortunately, I am going through a VERY rough time. I’m glad to know I have a safe space I can go to, to keep me physically and mentally out of serious harms way."
"My SO called the night prior to confirm that this was a 24 hr facility (COC). The person over the phone confirmed that and walked us through the process. We decided to go to the facility in the morning, still experiencing a crisis. We arrived at 8:05 AM on January 28th 2022, while experiencing a crisis. We were first met at the door by a tech saying that they are not open until 9am… we told her that the door reads “24/7” and she said, “Oh, okay” and let us into the waiting room. We were the only two clients in the reception area, when they asked us for ID and insurance information. 8:15 AM. As we are filling out paperwork and clearly having a mental health crisis, a different broadlawns nurse/tech asks us why we are here today. My SO explained briefly that I was in crisis and that we needed to access the Crisis Observation Center. She then informed us that there were no doctors in the building until 9am and asked if we could go run some errands or wait in the car. It is the middle of winter and in the single digits. Do we look like we are in the best state to run some errands? We then asked again if this was in fact a 24/7 hr facility, and if we were being kicked out, to which she confirmed that it was in fact a 24/7 facility and walked away. The lack of compassionate and professional care was appalling. I didn’t feel comfortable staying, so I asked to leave, at which point we collected our ID and insurance card and left. “As the community hospital, it is our privilege to attend to your health care needs, and the needs of our community. Our top priority is ensuring that high-quality healthcare is accessible and affordable to all.” - Broadlawns Mission Statement I hope someone at Broadlawns sees this. As a person of color, asking for help can be difficult. "As the community hospital, it is our privilege to attend to your health care needs, and the needs of our community." How do you think an interaction like this affects someone when asking for help? Does that create a safe and welcoming environment? "Our top priority is ensuring that high-quality healthcare is accessible and affordable to all." What kind of impression do you think that leaves? Do you think a person wants to ask for help after an interaction like this? I hope this gains visibility, so that some sort of change can be implemented. I don't want anyone else to have an experience like this. If you are looking for professional and compassionate care, please look elsewhere. There are other providers in the Des Moines area that can facilitate proper care."
