Pahukini Heiau Kaneohe, HI 96734

Pahukini Heiau is a historic Hawaiian temple site located in Kaneohe, Hawaii, United States. This heiau, or sacred place, is of the highest chiefly order and is situated in the middle of the now closed Kapaa landfill. Despite its unlikely setting, efforts have been made by community groups and individuals over the past 30 years to protect and make this heiau more accessible to the public.

The heiau is described as a monumental example of Hawaiian engineering knowledge and religious dedication, dating back to around 1110 A.D. It was built by High Chief Olopana for human sacrifices during times of war to seek favor from the god of war, Kukailimoku. The heiau is now covered by tall grasses and invasive plants, making it almost invisible to passersby.

Efforts to protect and preserve Pahukini Heiau have faced challenges over the years, with co-curatorship agreements with various organizations lapsing and neglect from the city. However, there are ongoing discussions to establish a new co-curatorship with local nonprofits and a concrete company to ensure regular access to the heiau for community service projects and religious practices.

Despite its current state, Pahukini Heiau holds great cultural and historical significance for the Hawaiian community. Efforts to restore and protect this sacred site are ongoing, with the hope of ensuring its preservation for future generations.
