"I stopped by the Wailuku store and checked out the beautiful Mele Ukuleles. I didn't end up purchasing anything, but met the owner and she told me about the history of the store and answered any questions I had. The young man working there (Skylar IIRC) was helpful and played the different ukuleles I was interested in so I could hear the sound from someone who could actually play well. "I was driving to get lunch during my trip last December when I saw a "Ukelele" sign and knew I had to turn around (when in Rome). I play a little guitar but have never played the ukelele before. The store is a bit hard to get to, I had to do several U-turns but it was def worth the hassle! Local musician Arlie (Avery Asiu) happened to be working that day and he's fantastic. I ended up staying there a couple hours, trying virtually every ukelele in the store while learning the backstory of each line, a bit of uke history, and Arlie's life as a musician in the process. They're so beautiful and sound amazing, especially the handmade/custom ones! After falling in love with the instrument, I purchased one of the beginner ukes with a built-in tuner/pick up and a cute case to go with it and scheduled a lesson with Arlie. Best decision ever! Took it with me to the beach. I even brought my uke with me to Aruba this past month. If you're visiting Maui, you must stop at Mele."
