About the Kīlauea Iki Trailhead
The Kīlauea Iki Trailhead is a popular tourist attraction located in Pāhoa, Hawaii, United States. This park allows visitors to descend through a lush rainforest to the solidified lava lake on the floor of Kīlauea Iki crater. You can peer into the vent that erupted to a height of 1900 feet during the eruption of 1959 located below Puʻupua‘i cinder cone. It offers a unique opportunity to witness the raw power of nature and explore the stunning volcanic landscape of Hawaii.
Reviews of Kīlauea Iki Trailhead
"Good but easier hike. Definitely go counterclockwise, like most say. Started at 9a on a Friday. Just starting to get busy, but still some parking. Very cool, geologically and visually. Rained on and off, but fairly warm. A little windy going across the bottom. Steep steps going down into the crater, but leisurely switchbacks going up at the end. We hit the Lava tubes at the end (short)."
"Take this trail to the floor of the volcano crater for an eerie walk back in Time. The national forest download able guide that goes with this trail will help you imagine the tumultuous landscape as lava filled this crater and created a lake hundreds of feet deep."
"The National Volcano Park was really cool. The first thing you get to see are the vents......so cool. The volcano rim was huge, a lot of steam but to lava. Bummer.....over all cool pics, and the volcanic landscape was like being on a mother world. The lava tube was really cool as well, just watching how late you show up, it is crazy dark in there at night."
"The highlight of the park. We parked at Lava Tubes and started straight down into the crater. Our plan was to do a loop by circling back on the canyon rim trail. In retrospect, I should have parked at Kīlauea Iki Overlook Parking Lot, because it had more spaces and a more accessible bathroom. The hike down to beautiful. It's a rainforest to rival any you might find. The path is steep, but completely manageable, even with old knees. Once in the crater, you're on another planet. You're walking directly on the lava with cracks, crevices, seedlings peaking through, even an occasional steam vent nearby. The hike out had some wicked switchbacks at first and was tougher. We then met up with the Canyon Rim trail and got a chance to see the same crater from above. We had a debate whether it would have been better to reverse it and see the above view first, but I'd say it's a matter of taste. The final treat was some deep holes just before we got back to the overlook parking lot. Overall, the best time investment we had at the park."
