Reviews of Lava Tree Molds
"So interesting to learn about yet another way lava can affect the landscape. Doesn't take long to view the handful of lava molds. Amazing to think that trees, with their water content, resisted the lava initially. By the time they dried up and burned, the lava had hardened around them so they left a big hole in the ground."
"Neat spot to see historical lava flows, and how deep they are. Also to see how big the trees used to be on the south end, they were HUGE"
"This is a short 10 minute stop when going to the Volcano National Park or Kipukapuaulu Trail. The holes in the ground might not seem like much to some but they show where lava had covered the trees from an eruption long ago. There is not a bathroom here but there is one at the picnic area less than a mile up the road. There is little parking but I have never seen more than just a couple cars at any given time, they parked on the road edge giving room for others to pass."
"Hard to tell what you are looking for if you just drive through! At the end of the circle you will see some metal railings. The tree molds are in the ground (as you're standing on the old lava flow) some are quite large and deep, nice quick tour before you go to the Volcano park!"
"These tree molds are worth the stop if you have the time. Very interesting to see. Guard rails block off these massive holes. Some molds reach several feet high, while some others are merely depressions. Could find so many big and small tree molds in this area. It's looks like deep wells. Parking is very limited, only two parking spots are available."
