Reviews of Pu'u Kalepeamoa
"We were *trying* to watch the sunset from the summit but it ended up to be too much of a hassle (we only had a few days, all tours were booked and we had a hard time finding a short-term 4x4 rental). Instead, we drove to the Visitor Centre (about a 40 minute drive from Hilo) and then hiked to this location. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous, above the clouds. Make sure to bring layers of clothing - I left my winter jacket in the car and only wore a hoodie and regretted it bitterly after the sun set. Stargazing after the sunset is also great, by the way, but need to wait for 60-90 minutes."
"A nice spot overlooking craters and clouds. Plus sunset and stars."
"Beautiful place to see the sun rise or sun set. It gets really cold, you need to wear warm clothes! You’re in the clouds and get amazing views of cinder cones, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Mauna Kea. Also awesome place to stargaze!"
"I’ve always wanted to drive above the clouds. This short but steep hike is located right beside the visitors center. We didn’t have 4x4 wheel drive to drive to the summit so we decided to stop here and watch the sunset. This was one of the most serene sunsets I’ve ever experienced. After sunset we did some astrophotography of the galaxy up on the hill. Even though the moon was almost full we could still make out the MWG. I would love to visit during a new moon."
"Awesome hike right by the mauna kea visitors center. It's a steep hike up total he top but the views are incredible, we went in the day time. Night time would have some pretty epic views. Not a long hike, but have good shoes on if your gonna do it."
