About the Diamond Head Lookout
Diamond Head Lookout, located at 3483 Diamond Head Road in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a popular tourist attraction known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. The unique profile of Diamond Head (Lē‘ahi) sits prominently near the eastern edge of Waikiki’s coastline, offering visitors a glimpse into the geological and military history of the area.
The 0.8 mile hike to the summit of Lē‘ahi is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet in elevation as it ascends from the crater floor. The trail was built in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system, leading hikers through switchbacks and steep stairs to the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. At the summit, visitors can see bunkers, a navigational lighthouse, and a postcard-worthy view of the shoreline.
The park facilities on the crater floor are fully accessible to those with disabilities, but the hiking trail to the summit is not ADA accessible due to its steep and uneven terrain. Entry and parking reservations are required for non-residents, and pets are not allowed in the park except for service animals.
Visitors can also enjoy a 360º VR narrated hike of the Diamond Head Trail or take a self-guided audio tour to learn more about the history, culture, and natural resources of the area. The park also offers a docent program for those looking to volunteer and help enhance the visitor experience.
The Division of State Parks is proposing improvements to Diamond Head State Monument to further enhance the visitor experience, and feedback from the public is encouraged. With over 3,000 visitors per day, Diamond Head is one of the most popular destinations in Hawaii, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Reviews of Diamond Head Lookout
"Very nice some homeless people on the cliffs. But they never bothered anyone. Surfing going on here also. Nice sunset spot. You can stay up top and enjoy as well. Free to the public."
"This photo was taken on a secluded beach near the parking lot of the Turtle Bay Hilton on the north shore of Oahu. To get there, walk as far as possible in the parking lot away from the resort - on the ocean side of the lot - and look for a path heading towards the beach. Take that and walk about a 10th of a mile and you've arrived. The beach there is beautiful and secluded, and great views of surfers and surf inevitably arise. Enjoy!"
"It's a 45-minute to an hour hike if you want to enjoy the views from the top of diamond head lookout. The elevation is quite steep, and I would rate this a moderate hike. There is a state park entry fee that you would have to pay to enter. The view from the top of the city is unmatched. You might see this photo when you search honolulu on Google search."
"Worth all the walk I didn’t read about need to make reservation before u can start to walk also I was thinking u can just purchase tickets in the entrance but no so just be aware of that I recommend like everyone else to go there early morning to see the sunrise or afternoon to watch sunset but definitely try to avoid the heat and if you brings kids make sure they can walk or you will get very tired if you try to carry them just advise!! Other than that enjoy is a beautiful view"
"Make sure you get a parkimg ticket in advance! It costs roughly $25 a car which was 100% worth it. This is probably the best view of the island you will get unless your in the air. It's a hike but it's paved or cut into the rock face the entire way. Some areas are a bit narrow but still room for 2 people side by side. There are plenty of spots to stop and take in the view while resting if you need it. There are water stations, vending machines and bathrooms at the start."
