Kula Forest Reserve 355 Mauna Place, Kula, HI 96790
About the Business
Kula Forest Reserve, located at 355 Mauna Place in Kula, Hawaii, is a unique park and tourist attraction managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife's Forestry Program. Established in 1912, the reserve was created to reforest an area that had been converted to pasture land after years of livestock grazing. Spanning over 4,900 acres, Kula FR is bordered by privately owned land and is adjacent to the Papa‘anui Tract of the Kahikinui FR.
The name "Kula" translates to open country or dry arid lands, reflecting the characteristics of the region. Once a thriving area for sweet potato cultivation, Kula underwent significant changes due to cattle ranching and grazing, leading to the replacement of native forest cover with non-native grasses. In the 1920s, an intensive planting program was initiated, introducing a variety of tree species to create a future forest resource and protect water sources.
Today, the Division of Forestry and Wildlife manages Kula FR and Papa‘anui, offering public access through the Polipoli Access Road and a network of interconnecting trails. Visitors can explore the diverse landscape and learn about the conservation efforts in place. The reserve's management plan aims to preserve the natural beauty and ecological significance of the area for future generations to enjoy.

"This is a very beautiful area with lots of different trails to explore. It is a popular hunting unit so dress bright and be curtious."
"Long winding road to see the whole island, sunset on the ocean and all the stars in the sky."
"As we're not able to reach Poli Poli park due to the deep hole along the way we decided to do the waiakoa loop, located at the lower part of the reserve..in my observation its a 3.5-mile hike starting from the parking area. The hike consists of inclines and declines... This is a moderately challenging hike due to the inclined part. I recommend bringing a sweater, jacket as the weather changes in a second. Over all, not a bad hike :) for safety please follow the trial... #happyhiking"
"I hiked the lower elevation of the park which is fill of trees. Was nice and calm, didn't seem to get much traffic. WARNING: Hunting happens in this park so wear bright colors, or typical orange vests to stay safe!"
