I requested Valerie's assistance as the consultant and facilitator for our "Full Circle" meeting where we bring together representatives from all of the branches of the organization, our board, and our staff to review the past couple of years and refocus our organization on its mission, policies and agendas. Founded in 1912, the organization is filled with strong, passionate people carrying out its volunteer-led mission. Valerie first guided and advised us on our goals in advance of our meeting so that we were clear ourselves on what we wanted, which was really critical for us as a staff and set us up for success. When the time came for the strategic board retreat, Valerie deftly wove all important elements of the strategic organizational assessment together, refocused and clarified our vision and values, and then went on to help us create realistic action steps based on group priorities. Watching Valerie work in a room of strong personalities and listening to the many different voices, she was like a conductor of a complex symphony working to bring all the parts together in a harmonious and amazing way. All participants left feeling respected and heard, as Valerie encouraged all voices and ideas, so that no one person or faction dominated. In this way, we could ensure that the best and brightest ideas came to the top. In the late April 2022, we engaged Valerie again to facilitate a Manoa Town Hall where the Old Manoa District Park Gym was filled with hundreds of people to learn about an issue facing their community, with spirited voices on different sides of this complex topic. We needed someone who was respected and could act as a neutral person to help participants share in an effective and thoughtful manner. Again, Valerie's decades of experience were critical in letting the community share its concerns and thoughts. Most important was setting a tone of aloha and clear rules, followed by careful management of speakers and judicious use of limited time to deftly summarize multiple questions and allow for the different opinions to be heard. People felt respected and listened to and many shared that this was due in large part to the facilitator Valerie. I've seen Valerie at work at other functions leading in different ways, whether at a business builder workshop or for peers looking for mutual support and guidance. I'm always impressed at her level of both high emotional and intellectual intelligence in surveying the room and making sure that everyone is included and heard, which of course makes all the difference for a successful outcome when facilitating or leading an event.
