Reviews of Hanakāpīʻai Falls
"Beautiful waterfall; well worth the effort to get there. Expect 8 miles (4.5hrs minimum) of hiking on unpaved rocky terrain. You will need to cross about 4 large rivers. Bring plenty of water and food. There are restrooms at Hanakapiai beach."
"Let me start by saying that this is NOT a hike for beginners, children, the elderly, or those with comorbidities. We saw an elderly gentleman (+70 years old) slip and gash his head open on a rock while crossing one of the many streams to the falls. My wife and I are relatively experienced hikers in WI, MN, & MI and this was an advanced hike for us with the last 1/2 mile to the falls being strenuous. I rolled my ankle twice and my wife bruised her knee. We packed light, 2L of water total, but definitely would have drank more of we had it. I would suggest wearing a bathing suit under your clothes as you will get wet crossing the stream multiple times. A good pair of agressive tread waterproof hiking shoes is a must. We did the trail to the falls and back to Haena Park (~9 miles) in 7 hours, including a 30 minute swim at the falls. Overall, the waterfall was well worth the hike. Be safe!"
"This hike is amazing with great views of the coast but go prepared! We brought 2.5L of water each and food for fuel. The hike to the beach is 2 miles and mostly uphill. It was down pouring when we were coming down and the rocks are slippery and you do have to be careful. Then it’s another 2 miles to the waterfall. The last .5miles to the waterfall is pretty challenging. On the way to the waterfall you cross 3/4 different streams and you need to be cautious. We wore running shoes but it would definitely been easier if we had hiking shoes on and proper water shoes handy. You won’t have any cell service so keep that in mind. We did see one person get hurt and it’s definitely a challenge to get assistance or help if you’re deep in the trail."
"Awesome adventure for our family! Lucked out with the weather, this would be very dangerous in the rain. It’s an all day, 8 mile hike with great spots to rest every 2 miles. We were exhausted at the end of the day. To me, the last 2 mile stretch felt strenuous due to the elevation changes. The kids say the most challenging was the two like stretch downhill from the waterfall"
"This was an amazing waterfall to hike to! Absolutely stunning! But this trail was tough. Having hiking poles and good traction on my shoes helped. Exceedingly muddy and slippery, with roots and rocks most of the way, plus a few tricky stream crossings. And it only rained on us the last mile headed out. Had it rained hard during the majority of our hike, it would have been an absolute nightmare for me with my not-so-great knees. I would do it again, but not if there's been rain lately or in the forecast. I would also book the first shuttle so you have plenty of time. For us, this was an all day affair... but we are in our mid-fifties. By far, the oldest people on the trail that day."
