"I like this beach! Most people do the hike out to Makalawena so it’s actually relatively not crowded (at all). Large and sandy. It’s not as beautiful as the other two but still pretty and spacious. There are restrooms here also and a small pretty pond that’s to the right as you head from the parking lot to the beach."
"This was fantastic. The lava field is humbling, kind of scary and makes you appreciate life all at once. Once you get to the beach it gorgeous! Things to know before you go: 1. You will need a jeep or a SUV to get all the way back there. 2. There is a place to park up front (which is what I did) and you can hike through the lava fields (on a roadish) to the park and beach. It is almost 2 miles one way. 3. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes. Do not wear sandals or flip flops. Water shoes are also nice to have once at the beach. 4. Mahai’ula Bay has a wonderful sandy beach with less rock. As compared to Ka’elehuluhulu which is a bit more rocky. Both are beautiful in their own way! If you walk through the lava field, take your time and enjoy it."
"This is probably my favorite beach. Soft white sand, beautiful views. It can get full pretty fast as it's pretty small. We went in the morning and got a good spot. When we went in the afternoon it was pretty packed. We wanted to go anyways. We got a decent spot on the sand and once in the water you don't really notice how crowded it is."
"Tough to get to but worth the trip. 4WD recommended, but we see cars making it. A short walk to the beach with classic coconut palm trees. Very interesting homestead property with interpretive signs on an historic fishing village. Along the shore are ancient ruins with freshwater cisterns that can be easily found with a little searching. My imagination runs wild imagining how Hawaiians thrived at this spot."
"Kekaha Kai State Beach is absolutely stunning! You’ll need a four-wheel drive car to get to it. We drove a jeep. The ride is definitely bumpy. But, worth the ride! Once you arrive to the parking lot you’ll have a 1/4 mile walk into the beach. The sand is the softest sand your feet will ever touch. It’s absolutely amazing. The views are breathtaking and the ocean water is warm. You can also watch the planes fly by landing at the nearby Kona airport. Pack a lunch, some chairs and boogey boards. This place is a slice of heaven on earth. Thank me later!"
