Reviews of Ahihi-Kinau Natural Reserve
"What an adventure to get to this nature area. We arrived midday and it was not very busy. There was plenty of parking. We wandered around the tidepools and found little marine animals such as fish and some sort of eel. We did not do the hike. If you are going to hike bring a hat, water and sunscreen."
"Beautiful rocky hike! You could spend all day here just going down different trails. The hike upwards to the rocky cliffs is not as busy as the loop down below. Definitely worth the bumpy ride here!"
"Rented ebikes in Kihei and rode to see this amazing area. The miles of lava covered fields is awesome. Perfect afternoon activity."
"This is a great spot on the island to get away from tourists and see what created these beautiful islands in the first place. The water is beautiful and the trails are nice to walk"
"This was one of the highlights of our week on Maui. Really cool landscape through the lava fields that changes around every turn. The sign at the entrance recommends closed-toed shoes and a first aid kit and I agree (although crocs would not be recommended for this Mars-landscape). Wear hiking shoes if possible, otherwise trainers/sneakers. Worth the initial section picking your way through the lava field to get to black lava beaches, speckled with bleached coral that were spread by wave-vents. The breeze was cool under the trees on the trail shared by hundreds of goats. They will stay out of your way if you leave them alone. This is the perfect place to get away from the hundreds of tourists at all of the other sights on the island."
