About the ʻĪao Valley State Monument
Located in Wailuku, Hawaii, the ʻĪao Valley State Monument is a park and tourist attraction that offers breathtaking views of the iconic Kuka‘emoku, also known as the ʻIao Needle. Visitors can take a leisurely 0.6 mile walk along a paved path to enjoy the stunning scenery and learn about the plants brought by the Hawaiians who settled in the valley.
Rich in cultural and spiritual significance, the ʻĪao Valley was the site of the historic battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, where Kamehameha I's forces triumphed over the Maui army. The park has been recognized as one of the best state parks in the nation, ranking 24th on THRILLIST's list in 2016.
Visitors are advised to check local surf and weather reports before their visit, and out-of-state residents must make advance reservations through the Hawaii State Parks website. Parking and entry reservations are required for non-residents as well. With its lush rainforest canopy and unique geological features, the ʻĪao Valley State Monument offers a truly unforgettable experience for all who visit.

Reviews of ʻĪao Valley State Monument
"Beautiful spot full of historical and spiritual significance. Nice walking routes up near the needle and down to the river. The river (Na Wai Eha - The Four Waters of Maui) is a peaceful (although prone to flash floods) and the cool waters felt great on my feet. A curious crawdad even gently tested out my foot! I walked here from the closest bus stop in Wailuku. It took about an hour and wasn't too hard, just walked against traffic to make sure cars saw me."
"Very beautiful place! It was breath taking. Made reservations that morning so I didn’t have a problem but the island was pretty empty when we went. Must stop to see when you visit Maui. Parking was easy we did pay to park inside but there’s not many spots. You could park outside and the walk is very short save the money. Take your time and walk around it’s a very short hike to see the needle and the gardens where beautiful. There were people going into the water when we were there. The have restrooms as well which was nice. Very nice place don’t miss it."
"Very beautiful state park. Definitely recommend this place if you are Maui. Very easy trails to see the needle shaped mountains. There is a beautiful garden. The views are fantastic, breath taking. Definitely recommend doing the reservation in advance because you may run out of tickets because this place you cannot miss for sure. Drive is fantastic to go this place, decent parking options and rest rooms are available."
"Timed reservation required. $10 for parking and $5 per person. Better do it online in advance as there was limited cell reception .There were some cars parked on the side of the road just before the entrance to the park. The lookout point was on an out and back trail (involving steps) with a total walking time of 30 minutes. It has 2 side branches to descend down to the waterfall and some benches. The park is 10 minutes away from the city below but surprisingly, it just drizzled in the park but not in the city!"
