"Experienced a summit excursion to see sunset and then to stargaze."
"It's an amazing place to visit. A very magical and special location makes you feel like if you're standing on another planet. I definitely back here. May sure you bring some warm clothes to visit this place, is 33,000 feet elevation. Bring 4x4 drive car."
"You need 4x4 to get up here. Make sure you have at least 3/4 tank of gas or the rangers will turn you back. Well worth the 8 miles drive from visitor station. 4 miles is dirt and 4 is paved. Sunset is unbelievable. You are above the clouds in Hawaii."
"The top of mauna kea is amazing and well worth the drive. You can drive a car to the visitors center, which is closed currently fire to covid, but the truly amazing experience is going to the summit. There is a ranger/guard at the visitors center who checks for four wheel drive and notes the number of people in your vehicle. The road is steep and windy with a lot of washboarding. It's not bad if you go slow. Above about 12,000 feet the road switches to paved again for the last climb. Use a very low gear on the way down and go slow and you'll do fine. Plan about an hour, round trip, from the visitors center to the top and back."
