"The long bumpy road of life is made better by destinations like Polihale State Park. 4 wheel drive was worth having so we could get back in the dunes, and we had the best view from our camp spot. We watched whales for hours, dolphins, and of course a few tour boats. The swells calmed a bit after recent storms, so a few surfers were out, but the water was rough and with strong currents, so wading was as good as it got from the beach."
"Yeah the dirt road is no joke, but it's worth it if you have a truck that can make it! Our jeep did the trick, saw a Kia hatchback car get stuck. After a few miles we made it to the camp sites - unmarked so we just had to drive around until we found a dugout site with no one in it. Wish the sites were easier to identify and that the bathrooms had soap or dryers of some sort - for $30 a night I feel the facilities should be better maintained. The beach was beautiful and easy to access in many many parts! Beach is not good for swimming but worth a stop for a while. I recommend going in daylight in order to find the sites easier - we went at night and it was hard to navigate or even see sites at all!"
"The road in is like something out of a war zone. We had a seriously modified 4x4 and it still took 30+ min to get out there. Lower sedans will get tossed around and scraped up bumpers etc, but I saw them bouncing down the road with some distraught occupants. Don't be tempted to drive on the beach itself too. Clearly people do it, but we saw someone stuck and high centered himself who needed a real rescue vehicle. The last bit into the campground is sandy, but not deep or scary at all in most places. If you get stuck, you were being foolish. Once you get out there though, it's the best. Great camping spots too, although need reservations, which were never checked. Toilets and a tepid water shower pole were a big plus. Really dark at night, you can see more stars than you likely have before."
"had to drive down this dirt path for about 30 minutes to get there but it was worth the drive. one of the prettiest sunsets i’ve ever seen and there was only one other family on this beach - lots of space and a 360 of beautiful views. the water is not safe for swimming in the winter"
"It’s gorgeous here and if you have time on the island, it’s a worthy visit. This is a peaceful and un crowded beach that is quite large and great for camping. If you have a , you’ll fare well. It is definitely rugged to get to; my friend and I drove an economy rental, and the road in was a bumpy ride. We managed to get in and out without too much issue, but drive carefully. Watch out for the sand flies after dusk/dark as they are prevalent at ground level, so the beach is pretty inhospitable once they arrive (this happens on most beaches there though). The sunsets here are epic and were worth the drive."
