The Cabins at Kokee,

"despite some neg online reviews, we came and glad we did. Yes the cabin is old and things are rusted and so forth, but it's in the mountain. It's pretty close to the nature and I guess we can forget about luxury for a while. Nevertheless the stay was comfy. Water was running strong and hot enough for a nice shower. But be reminded that kitchen ware can be dirty as the previous guests may not have done a good cleaning job. And we picked up some logs for fireplace from checkin office. Staff was nice and helpful but the logs were kinda moist. Could not get it lit out without help of quick fire logs. But overall a nice stay here"

"These cabins pose the classical question do you want location or luxury? We actually love staying at the single cabin. nai’o and it was the perfect location and size. These cabinets are little rough around the edges. It is very nice to wake up and be so close to the hiking trails. Notice the timing and logistics are a bit of a challenge on a weekend as you have to wait at the Waimea location for your keys but they explain it all. And tell you to pack your food in a cooler while you’re waiting."

"These cabins were very disappointing. All furniture and appliances old and run down, looking as if they were picked up at yard sales or the junk yard. The beds were uncomfortable, with no headboard and mattresses that felt like water beds.  The pillows felt as if they had been used for many years... just a lumpy thing under your head. The bathroom mirror and sink were all rusted and dirty (picture attached). The kitchen was likewise: every spoon was from a different set; the utensils dirty and greasy; dirt in the cutlery drawers. The cooking range was rusted, dirty and broken in places. The toaster toasted only one side (filament for other side burnt out). The tap water had a weird taste but there was no caution that it wasn't potable (we decided to buy bottled water - a special 30-mile trip to Waimea for that). To top it all, a dank smell pervaded all parts of the cabin, making returning to it for the night a depressing thought. Just about every sense was offended! But there were no alternatives after arriving at this remote location and we had to sleep there. The price (we paid about $180 per night) is very high given the condition and maintenance. For those kind of rates, we got  much better appointed and serviced accommodations in other parts of Kauai over the last week. Given their fantastic location in the heart of Koke'e State Park, these cabins have the potential to be made so much nicer with a little bit of care and good management. But the way we experienced them, we feel fleeced and disappointed. Don't recommend staying here - save yourself the torture. No Mahalo to the management in this case!"

"The cabin was cute and ideally located near all the best hiking trails Waimea Canyon has to offer. However, the cabin was also not cleaned prior to our arrival. Everything in the kitchen had to be washed before cooking/eating. The wood burning stove seemed great, but had been damaged by a previous guest and could not maintain a fire for more than a few minutes. (No ability to control air intake) Guest services were also extremely limited as office staff worked remotely and were only available in person for a few hours in the afternoon. For the $400 or so we paid, if was definitely not woeth it. I would rather just sleep in the campground next time I'm up there."

"Cabins are as described! We were happy staying here with the proximity/convenience to hiking and price, just knocking down because of rooster noise crowing from 1am-6am nightly and slightly uncomfortable beds. Otherwise everything was great. Cabins are quaint, fairly rustic, and off grid but have everything you need including coffee maker, microwave, kitchen stuff for cooking, and extra blankets for cooler evenings. If you’re looking to stay somewhere a bit more upscale in West Kauai, I’d recommend the Waimea Plantation cottages."
