"A large group of friends had booked a rental property in Lake Tahoe for an extended weekend. Several of us had flights booked and were in the process of coordinating our trek from Oregon, down through Reno and to the rental property. This was quickly beginning to unravel when El Dorado County was plunged into some pretty terrible conditions due to the Caldor Fire. The AQI is in the Hazardous levels and the property is quickly being encroached upon by the evacuation zone (photos are posted, the small “X” on the right side of the evacuation map shows the approximate location of the home of reference). As a result we inquired about a cancellation due to the extreme circumstances we were faced with and the response we received (photo posted below) was just unacceptable. There is a reason we booked this trip in August and NOT October/November. However, According to Tom with this “Realty and Rental office”, our options are A.) Risk extremely unsafe air conditions (or evacuation) to make our trip “work” (despite it being unreasonable for us to occupy that house right now). Or B.) Postpone our “Summer” trip to late fall to make sure you get your money despite circumstances that are beyond our control. It should be noted that they offered us TWO comp nights despite us having booked THREE nights in August. This is hardly an “accommodation” and more of a cop out by the Property owners. I understand that the circumstances are not ideal for all parties involved but to try maintain your “profits” by not refunding our group despite the extreme circumstances of our situation is predatory and frankly unethical. To make matters worse, VRBOs cancellation policy essentially provides property owners with the ability to cancel potential customers reservations with no penalty due to circumstances including wildfires (I’ve attached a photo of VRBOs cancellation policy as well). It would seem that despite being given the ability to offer a solution that would be mutually beneficial to everyone (allow the 12 of us to cancel our reservation due to circumstances beyond our control and refund), Sierra Tahoe Realty and Rentals would rather hold our money hostage and offer a less than adequate reservation in its place (for full price). Your lack of empathy for your customers is noted and Im hopeful potential renters take heed of my warning before renting with you as it’s obvious that you do not hold the best interests of your customer base at heart and instead are resulting in predatory business practices to maintain potential profits instead of doing what’s right. TL;DR: Sierra Tahoe Realty engages in unethical and predatory business practices and need to be better."
