Dollar Car Rental

"Despite all the bad reviews, we had a good experience. We booked dollar car using all-car-rental website. We had PRE- CHECKED IN through an email link which saved our time at the counter. I was really skeptical about their service and the car after reaching Kona, to my surprise everyone went pretty great. We received Dodge Charger which was pretty common car in Kona for some reason and it was really awesome. Well cleaned and maintained!! Heads up: 1) When you land and exit baggage claim area, I would suggest to go to the farthest left bus stop(away from the exit), as the bus drivers starts picking up from the first bus stop. There are chances of lot of crowd and mini buses cannot accommodate many people. 2) If you are landing during the day and if its sunny, be prepared for standing in a long queue outside, as the dollar car rental place doesn't have much cover/closed space near the counter. 3) PRE-CHECK IN with your license and insurance saves alot of time. 4) If you are under 25, be prepared to get charged more, as the websites sometimes don't include the under25 charge depending on where you are booking from. 5) If you don't have credit card, be prepared for $500 hold on debit card with the rentals which they refund immediately after returning the car. For credit card, the hold is $300."

"The wait time and the process of picking up the car is very lengthy. Not sure why it takes so long to pick up a car. I booked online through booking com and paid exactly what was quoted on my booking. I always decline coverage and prepay gas. There is a Costco gas about 10mins from airport (pay attention to close time) and my credit card and personal car insurance covers rentals. Returning the car was easy and the catching the shuttle both ways was a breeze."

"Big big scam! Be ready to pay a lot more than what you expected. I purchased an insurance online and the lady told us that if anything happens to the car, they are not responsible for it and I will have to pay my own pocket first and contact the third party for insurance. She basically scared me and made me purchase the insurance on the spot. She also suggested me to pay the gas upfront and made me believe that I can get my money back if I return it in full. So I did filled it up in full, but I didn’t get my money back for the gas. They ripped me off big time. Be careful to rent a car from RC Dollar. I do not recommend this company at all. Stay away from them!"

"Dollar does not clean their cars. Gross! We reserved a car, which they did not have when we arrived, so they offered us a convertible and mini van, both which were not cleaned. Both car’s seats were covered in sunscreen and the glass was greasy, which made it incredibly difficult to see while driving at night. The convertible’s seats were greasy to the touch. It’s as of the cars were just returned an hour ago and not cleaned. Gross! When we returned the car, the agent did not care about Dollar’s dirty and poor quality rental. We won’t be renting from Dollar again, because their cars are gross. Mahalo!"

"We arrived at 6:30 PM and were quickly assigned a car. The return process was easy as well. Only longish period of waiting (20 minutes) was when the car was being picked up from the drop off lot and driven to the pick up lot. That process could use some work. The agent walks to the drop off lot to drive the car to the pick up lot. Each car is individually moved and that process takes quite some time. Overall, very positive experience."
