"Great little airport for your island hopping adventure. Most seating is outside and pleasant on the Kona dry side. Limited air conditioning if the day gets really hot but that is rare. Flights are pretty much all ramp loaded versus an elevated jet bridge so be prepared if you have access issues."
"The weather will be the determining factor for if you like this airport. On a warm night it's perfect to get off the cold plane but if it's raining good luck. I honestly have no idea of what they do when it's raining because I've never landed or taken off when it's been raining. It does however get very windy at times so bring dramamine if needed. Like any airport things will be pricey so buy outside down in Kona if you can first. Otherwise I'm sure the store owners don't mind if you forget things. Or need that last minute souvenir. The airport has been the same for a long time so it is in need of some repair but they are currently making some very nice updates. Note: After TSA and before you get on the plane there will be a second screening to make sure you aren't bringing things that don't belong in the US soil. Invasive species are no fun to deal with. So leave your apple bananas or eat them."
"A small cute and a beautiful airport. This is the only open airport I have seen till date. Decent rest room options, not many food options expect some stores to buy drinks or snacks. Shuttle available to the rental car. Less crowded when I was travelling. It is about 45 mins ride to the main airport Honolulu the main city in Hawaii."
"A beautiful airport! The staff is quite friendly. Their operation seems efficient. We deplaned and got our luggage in a breeze! And what a beautiful setting. With the mountains in the distance, these classic style buildings are all outside. Have you not had your bag checked And gotten your departure ticket outside before? Quite an experience."
"This is barely a functioning airport. It is beat up, run down, and for some crazy reason it was designed to be completely outdoors. There is no good wifi, no outlet chargers, no air conditioning, and expect to get fully soaked on your way to your flight because all the runways and paths to and from security are outdoors with no roof. And, it rains a lot here! So bring an umbrella, charge your devices, and don’t get here early because you’ll be sitting out in the heat on old hard benches. While you sit at your gate, you will be subjected to the smell of jet fuel and exhaust, the blasting of jet engines, and the angry bickering of travelers who are hot and sweaty and uncomfortable sitting at the dirty gates surrounded by litter. The boarding areas are so crowded that they are certainly a fire hazard. More than that, the staff here have no aloha spirit. The security checkpoint staff are rude and on a power trip, and they have not combined the agricultural checkpoint and the security checkpoint scanners, so everyone has to essentially go through security twice. If Kona really cares about supporting tourism, they should knock this concrete pile down and start over with something from the 21st century."
