Reviews of Big Island Tea
"Located just a few minutes from Volcano National Park, Big Island Tea is a wonderful side trip on your Big Island adventure. Our hosts, Eliah and Cam, have a wonderful food forest that's easy to get to and they are very knowledgable and hospitable. First, we took an easy walking tour of their five acre property that features not only tea plants but also coffee, a bamboo grotto and a wide assortment of other tropical plants. We were accompanied by their ball-fetching dogs and shown their tea processing house before sitting down to a tea-tasting on the lanai. While I'm not much of a tea lover, my friends were in heaven and I had a delightful time learning about different kinds of tea and the process of curing it. I left feeling like we had made some new friends and will be taking all of our visitors there for a unique and wonderful experience."
"Our family had the great pleasure of the reopening today of Dr. Cam and his wife Eliah tea farm. The walk thru the entire farm was serene and educational. Learning about how the forest can help with growth and how tea is cultivated and brought to tea lovers. We enjoyed several tastings of their leaves along with some amazing sweets. The best was just relaxing and swapping stories with the founders. Please go to their farm and relax, Mahalo to them for a lovely day."
"Amazing experience at Big Island Tea! I honestly can’t recommend this tour enough. Dr. Muir and his wife are super knowledgeable and doing some amazing things. This was truly one of the highlights of our trip to the big island. If you get a chance for sure book a tour. On top of that, it was probably the best tea I have ever had."
"My wife and I are big tea enthusiasts, but have never had the opportunity to visit a farm before as they are so rare within the United States. While visiting the Big Island we saw this farm and decided to try the tour. While we would have loved the the attend workshop they offer, we had our 2 year old with us and thought it would be a bit much. Cam and Eliah met us outside and gave us a tour of the farm followed by a tea tasting. The tour was very interesting. They grow a large variety of plants and are so excited to share their experiences! The entire tour felt very friendly and you were very much treated like Ohana. We were nervous about doing a tour with a two year old and when he started to throw a fit and they were both amazing with him! He ended up having so much fun. They both really know what they are talking about and have developed a fascinating concept. Instead of simply giving the tea plants what they need to survive for harvest, they are building a full natural ecosystem around the tea plants to help them thrive as naturally as possible. Does it pay off? Yes! The flavor of the tea is outstanding! I cannot overstate what a difference the natural environment makes for the tea and the number of overtones it picks up from its environment. The tea tastes distinctly Hawaiian with floral and citrus notes lifting the tea and opening the palette. I recently attended a chocolate tasting where I tried bars of chocolate made at the same factory from beans grown at various locations. The Ecuadorian, Tanzanian, and Hawaiian beans all had very different flavors, the Hawaiian being my favorite. Yet the fascinating thing that I found here, was that the overtones in the Hawaiian chocolate were were almost identical to the overtones in the tea I tasted today. All this to say, Hawaiian produce has a distinct and beautiful flavor and the way Cam and Eliah run their farm shows true respect to their Āina."
"Cam and Eliah took care of us like family. We got a tour of the 3 acre farm with more different types of plants than i could name, including the tea itself. The climate up at 2800' was perfect. Then we sat down and had some of the best tea I've tasted. Great trip!"
