Reviews of Desi's Indian Curry
"This is a literal hole in the wall, a hidden gem in the middle of Waikiki that serves perhaps the best Indian food across all the islands. Chef Ashwani started his journey over 4 decades ago at Delhis iconic Taj Mahal hotel in 1978. Since then he made his way to DC and has operated several restaurants until he made his way to Hawaii. Tip: Lunch is the time to go, where it isn’t crazy like the evenings, and Chef Ashwani may have the time to customize the dishes (we requested paneer be added to Mufi’s vegetable - a favorite of the Hawaiin mayor). We liked to the food so much we came back twice for the North Indian fare (think more curries). We had the excellent Chana masala made Amritsari style (supposedly the OG), the succulent paneer with mufi veggies in a mild Hawaiin tomato creamy gravy, a succulent lentil dish called dal makhani made with homemade ghee. Everything is prepared fresh and made to order, without it being oily or one noted. Rice comes complimentary with all curries. Ask for medium spicy, or if you want to amp it a little but don’t want it too hot, the medium plus is the secret code. Get the garlic naan, it comes with a light layer of garlic, basil and butter. If you are tired of poke, pizza, salads, bbq, it’s a solid choice to sample some of chef Ashwani’s succulent cuisine that will leave your taste buds tingling. We will be back on our next trip. Thank you Chef for not diluting the essence of Indian food."
"This is not a restaurant per say. It is in a food court, gyros next door, Korean Mex tacos and other foods. So when you get your food you are sitting in a common courtyard. So now to Desi’s, the food is outstanding. The cook is from India and the food is cooked to order. Nothing that I saw was prepared in advance. The quality and quantity were very good. There is a Japanese lady taking your order who is very pleasant and helpful. A surfer Highly recommend this for a casual lunch or dinner. I have removed the pictures as requested. Please note that not only did I ask to take your pictures, you both posed for them and I further told you I was going to post them on Google maps. This was done with your full permission."
"This was unexpectedly one of the best meals we had over the two weeks we were in Oahu. The naan was to die for, especially the garlic basil naan. My wife got the butter chicken which was sweet, savory, and delicious! The chicken was extremely well cooked. I had the fish curry and got it 10/10 hot (Indian spicy). It was incredible. The fish was super mild and allowed the curry sauce to do they heavy lifting on flavor. It’s some of the best curry I’ve ever had! If you’re near Waikiki and you want a reasonably priced dinner that is WAY tastier than you’d ever expect, please do yourself a favor and stop by Desi’s Indian Curry!"
"Went there over the weekend and the staff was accommodating as we reached there at 815pm, while their closing time was 830pm. The food was good, but the quantity was less for the price we paid I feel. The naan were really ice and soft. Mango lassi was too watery and did not feel like lassi at all. Good place to have indian food quickly, right near the main street in Waikiki."
