About the Sushi Ginza Onodera
Sushi Ginza Onodera, located at 808 Kapahulu Avenue in Honolulu, Hawaii, offers a traditional Omakase dining experience led by Executive Chef Takeshi Shimbashi. Established in 2013, this small, wood-hued building features a sushi counter that offers three Omakase menus and a selection of sake. The chefs, trained in the Ginza main store, serve authentic Edomae Sushi and other delicious options to guests from around the world. Using a variety of techniques, such as marinating and curing raw fish with salt, red vinegar, and soy sauce, they aim to showcase traditional Japanese culture through food. The rice, made with high quality sake lees and aged red vinegar, complements the quality Edomae Sushi perfectly. Reservations for the Omakase menu are required and can be made online. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and all dinner reservations are prepaid. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not accommodate substitutions or alterations to dishes, but they do ask for any allergies to be communicated in advance. Guests are asked to arrive on time for their reservation, as the seating lasts 2 hours.

Reviews of Sushi Ginza Onodera
"Excellent quality sushi that's on par with the main Ginza Tokyo location. Great service. Top sushi place on the island. Lunch menu is good value."
"The restaurant was small and quaint, it only had about 7 seats at the sushi counter, which is about the entirety of the restaurant. The staff there are phenomenal and extremely nice. They really care about the service they provide, constantly cleaning your area, filling your drink, and even show you a picture of the fish for each piece. The restaurant was omakase style, and you have the option to add a few more pieces to it at the end. They served about 15 pieces, along with two apps, and dessert. The sushi itself was overall good, 3-4 outstanding pieces, and the rest were good. Not a single piece was fishy, nor an undesirable texture. My only complaint is that the eel had small fish bones in it. Overall, solid sushi place. As a side note, they refuse to accept tips, as traditionally it's included in the price."
"One of the best omakase I’ve had. It is a shame their NYC location shut down. Everyone was knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. They have limited parking available (3 spots). The fish are extremely fresh and are very unique."
"Today was supposed to be a celebration on New Year's Eve, and we were looking forward to the dinner. However, upon entering, the entire restaurant was filled with the smell of the sewer, making it difficult to be happy. Despite being seated in a private room, we hoped the smell would be less intense, but it lingered throughout the entire dinner. Not wanting to ruin our long-awaited evening, we asked some incense hoping to mask the unpleasant odor, but it proved ineffective against the nauseating smell. Moreover, the disappointment extended to the dishes; the ingredients were not as fresh as expected, resulting in an ordinary appearance. I had no inclination to photograph the dishes, and the taste was also very ordinary. Forget surprises; some dishes couldn't even pass in my opinion. The hairy crab meat with egg custard was not enjoyable, and the overall quality of the sushi was disappointing. The rice was too firm, and some fish tasted excessively salty. I found satisfaction only in the sweet shrimp sushi, squid sushi, and anglerfish liver. Considering the meal cost $350 per person, my expectations were high, but this disappointing experience ensures I won't be returning. This restaurant truly ruined what could have been a delightful evening."
"So good!! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here for lunch. The 15 piece Sora lunch omakase course + chawanmushi, miso soup, omelette and dessert was great value for $150pp and no tip (japanese style). The chefs were friendly and fun, not to mention very skilful. The serving team made us feel welcome and showed us pictures of the different fish that we weren’t familiar with on an iPad. Everything was delicious and fresh, and we were quite satisfied and full but the end of it all. Highly recommend to book a few weeks early!"
