"As of April 2023, the runway at Stovepipe Wells is a bit bumpy with significant asphalt cracking but in far better condition that that of Furnace Creek. It’s 1/3-mi walk to the very exposed campground or 1/2-mi to the General Store and the Lodge. There aren’t as many services available at Stovepipe as at Furnace Creek but it’s valuable to have this airstrip for recreational access as well as for emergency purposes - in fact, a clerk at the store said that a fellow employee was recently airlifted out when in need of immediate medical attention. The public is well-served by these low-impact airstrips in Death Valley."
"The surface is rough but nothing standard 6-600's can't handle. Cracks are approximately an inch wide and an inch deep. Surface was clean with no FOD observed. It is a short walk to the campground down the road. I am looking forward to flying friends and family out here who otherwise do not have the free time to travel by car to this part of America."
"Stovepipe Wells is a great remote desert airfield to fly in to discover. It’s just a short walk to the nearby convenient store and hotel. You can make reservations to spend the night and you’ll have nice accommodations with a place to get a real meal. This is truly a desert adventure if you fly in. Plan accordingly, make sure you have adequate water and food in case you have to land out, bring your own secure tiedowns, most importantly make sure you have adequate fuel to return do your next fuel stop. There is no 100LL fuel within a short flying distance. These airfields within the National Parks are always in danger of being closed. Be a conscientious visitor. Support the efforts to keep these wonderful airports open. The Park Service is proposing to close and remove this Unique public aviation experience. Please participate in making a comment on their Death Valley planning website to save this historic airstrip!"
"Nothing but a runway, it was great to grab a quick photo."
"Love the location of this airport! The runway is getting pretty rough and doesn't seem maintained, with spots of heightened asphalt from earthquakes. Make it a soft field landing, and you'll be fine, though. For the people wanting to make it a night sky community: there are no lights to begin with at this airport making it unusable at night. Please don't shut these places down! They are never used at night by planes!"
