About the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, located in Ogema, Minnesota, is a park that serves as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The diverse landscape of the refuge includes eastern deciduous hardwoods, northern coniferous forests, and western tallgrass prairie, creating a rich ecosystem for plants and animals. The refuge is home to a large population of nesting trumpeter swans, as well as species such as the golden-winged warbler, woodcock, and ring-necked ducks.
Visitors to the refuge can enjoy the vibrant emergence of spring woodland wildflowers, the rich colors of autumn, and the quiet hush of winter. The refuge also provides habitat for Minnesota state icons such as the common loon, showy lady's slipper, and red pine tree. The National Wildlife Refuge System, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, focuses on wildlife conservation and uses a variety of land management tools to ensure the survival of local plants and animals.
The refuge has played a key role in the restoration of the trumpeter swan population in Minnesota, with more than 50 successful nesting pairs now residing in the area. Efforts to enhance habitat for the golden-winged warbler, a declining species, have also been a focus at the refuge. Visitors may have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the elusive gray wolf, which resides in packs on the refuge.
In addition to conservation efforts, the refuge offers opportunities for volunteers, youth groups, and local communities to get involved in helping to preserve the natural environment. Management tools such as prescribed fires and natural succession practices are used to restore native plant communities and maintain the balance between wildlife and people.
Visitors to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, learn about native wildlife and plants, and contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts that benefit both the environment and the community.

"What can I say but this place is amazing. Not far from Detroit Lakes but still feels like the deep woods. The refuge has some decent hiking trails including the North County Scenic Trail with runs through it. If you are stay by the car type there is a decent wilderness drive and a very nice visitor center. Refuge has some good water options with many lakes and the Ottertail River running through it. If you go in early June there is an abundance of wildflowers. Be prepared for dirt roads/ tics/ and mosquitoes."
