About the Business
Barcroft Field Station, located at 3000 E. Line St in Bishop, California, United States, is a research facility situated at an elevation of 3800m (12,470’). The station can accommodate up to 20 people in comfortable dorms and offers three labs for visiting research scientists and their students. With wireless internet access and power generated from rooftop solar panels, Barcroft Station is an off-grid facility.
Constructed in 1951 in the White Mountains, Barcroft has been a hub for research on the physiological effects of high elevation. It was also utilized by Noble laureate George Smoot for research in cosmic background radiation. The station includes the Nello Pace Laboratory, a multipurpose classroom, living room area, and recreational facilities. Nearby are outbuildings housing research projects, an observatory dome, and a well and pond for water supply.
Five miles to the north, at White Mountain Peak, is the summit laboratory. The surrounding lands are part of the McAfee Meadow Research Natural Area. The White Mountain Research Center acknowledges the Nüümü (Paiute) & Newe (Shoshone) as the first Peoples and traditional land stewards of the region. As a facility managed by a land grant institution, respect is paid to the Müaddübü (Elders) and Hümü (our relatives/relations) of past, present, and emerging generations.
