EDITED for clarity: We met with Alex from Erickson Mediation, and had a fairly terrible experience where the focus was on feelings and empathy with very little focus on driving resolution on things like child care custody and/or business matters. He was nice, but we didn't need nice or even someone with big therapy energy. We needed a dispassionate person to come in and evaluate our financial and custody situation and help us make progress based on their deep bench of knowledge. Erickson did not deliver that. From there, the price was intensely cost-prohibitive. We ended up using Jeff Johnson Mediation (no affiliation), and were very happy. He was less expensive and twice as effective at getting us to stay focused, avoid contentious discussions and drive agreement. The documents he prepared were thorough, clear and helped us immensely. Best of luck navigating a truly awful and almost always unforeseen phase of life."

"Steve Erickson and Marilyn McKnight did a workshop on mediation decades ago at our church. I asked, how could a couple, who almost always have fear and trepidation about divorcing, sit in front of a mediator, reach an agreement on dividing income and assets, and work with each other to remain good parents? "They don't come back" was the answer. It is their decision and fair to both parties. They are not back in court six months or later seeking a different agreement.
