Great River T’ai Chi Chuan, located at 4557 Colfax Avenue South in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a renowned institution celebrating 45 years of providing classes in t’ai chi ch’uan, ch’i-kung (qigong), and I Ching (Yijing). T’ai Chi Ch’uan is a Chinese discipline that combines elements of health, martial arts, meditation, mindfulness, and exercise. Classes at Great River T’ai Chi Chuan, taught by experienced instructors Barbara Davis and Cheryl Powers, focus on improving immune function, balance, coordination, fall prevention, leg strength, blood pressure, posture, mindfulness, and mental focus.

Founded in 1979, Great River T’ai Chi Chuan is one of the oldest t’ai chi schools in the American Midwest. Instructors Barbara Davis and Cheryl Powers have trained in Taiwan and the US with senior students of Professor Cheng Man-ch’ing, a pioneer in bringing t’ai chi to the West. They offer classes year-round at all levels, emphasizing practical applications of t’ai chi for health, relaxation, and self-defense.

In addition to regular classes, Barbara Davis and Cheryl Powers have taught and presented at national and international seminars, workshops, colleges, corporations, and conventions. Both instructors have contributed extensively to t’ai chi literature and research. In-person classes are held in southwest Minneapolis at Grace Episcopal Church, while online classes are available on the Zoom platform.
