Northern Breezes Sailing School

"The owner and guy testing for his instructor cert treated me poorly as a woman. They teased me and dissed my sailing experience. Very old school behavior that has no business especially in a sailing school offering advanced classes (I was taking ASA106). I also found answers to questions by me and another student were brushed off. On top of that, the boat didn't have working bilge pumps which led to a lot of black water and mold on the boat which subsequently made me sick."

"Upon arrival for our course; our instructor indicated the expectation was we were testing out of 101/103 and we immediately indicated we paid for full instruction as we wanted a solid foundation to build from. We learned that the other couple on our boat had expected/paid to test out. We were all instructed the same. This resulted in a roller coaster ride where we did not feel prepared. We read all materials front to back and prepared as much as we could prior to arrival. We got through it but man, it was touch and go. It left us not knowing if want to sail again and if we do, we will hire a captain for first few days. I called North Breezes immediately to voice concern and requested refund difference between 101/103 instruction and test out cost (significant $). I was told by the owner he would discuss with office staff and get back to me. I never heard so I followed up 2 weeks later. Spoke briefly to owner again and he assured me he would circle back. 2 more weeks pass by and still no response. Sent email documenting ask a week ago, no response. If the owner full filled committment regardless of outcome, I would've kept this between us. As I look back, a lot of red flags... be warned. Update: I received a response after I made my question public a couple hours after Northern Breezes opened today. All could have be avoided if owner took time to circle back as committed within reasonable time frame. My post reflects exactly what I verbally and in writing requested. This was unfortunate and completely avoidable. My review will remain posted to help next customer... look elsewhere."

Captain Thom was very accommodating with my schedule. He assessed my skill level and experience and adjusted the course to fit my advanced level. He offered extra advice and tips expand my knowledge. Great instructor. I had a blast. His sailboat is simple to learn on, he has everything labeled and walks you through every step of becoming a advanced sailor. Would recommend at anyone interested in learning how to sail."
