Reviews of Evan's American Gourmet Café
"Acceptable. Not good, not bad. Don't expect anything innovative on the menu. This isn't fine dining, just standard fare prepared to a decent level. The waiting staff lost the chef a star. They were passive aggressive and borderline hostile, as if waiting on customers is beneath them. We were greeted with an accusatory - 'why didn't you answer the phone?', having already confirmed our table earlier. We can recommend several other restaurants in the area which serve tastier food at a lower price point. e.g. Izabella."
"The first thing the host said at the door was an accusatory, "we've tried to phone you twice today", however skiing in heavy snow in an area of poor reception does not make answering the phone easy. Service did not really improve from there, we were seated and then left until another table came in 10 minutes later so that the server could go through the specials with both tables at once, the other tables order was then taken before ours despite us having been in the restaurant for significantly longer. The food was alright but nothing special and the bread tasted like it was bought at a supermarket. Desert was disappointing considering the website waxes lyrical about their pastry chef, I think the closest item on the menu to pastry was a croissant bread pudding. The cheesecake tasted like standard store fare. The whole experience lacked the sophistication I would expect at this price point. Starter of roasted quail was the highlight and was actually very good, main course was bland with nothing to elevate it beyond average and desert was an uninspiring waste of calories."
"This is a real house turn into a restaurant. 3 lady's are the hosts, they are the waitress and they all run the front of the house. Great hospitality. The food was incredibly delicious!! The savory cheese cake made with fish and lobster was really nice and yummy. Our scallops were great the sauce and pasta were delicious the fillet mignon also. Big selection of wines. The atmosphere is very nice, I love the small restaurant quite and peaceful. We were here to celebrate my husband birthday and we all have an amazing time. The lady's will make sure there is not crumbs on your table.. very fancy, I love the attention. If you are in Tahoe you must stop by this restaurant!"
"It's so delightful to find a gem like Evans in Lake Tahoe! Quaint, small and DELICOUS!!! I haven't been to Tahoe in years, but having dinner here was one o the high lights of my trip. I had the special Halibut with wild rice & veggies, butter salad first, served with freshly baked sour dough. As a chef treat, duck liver pate with crustinis served. My friends ordered the Duck and Pork chop dinners nothing was left on their plates! Desert, housemade Rasberry ice cream, Choc creme brulé with berries served with a raspberry sauce Reservations are a must, so plan ahead."
"We reserved a table at Evans for our Elopement night dinner. It is a beautiful quaint restaurant where people go to celebrate. The ambiance was great not too loud, tables were distant enough for privacy but close enough you could have a conversation with other guests (which we did multiple times throughout our meal) The wine was fairly priced and the service was spot on. If you want great food look no further. This was definitely the best part about this perfect restaurant. Perfectly cooked, the right temperature and a great blend of flavors. We will go back to Tahoe just to eat at Evans."
