"I highly urge any employer or insurance broker looking into UNUM for elective benefits, to please, Please do business with UNUM. You are doing your employees a disservice by electing this horrible insurance company, whose main goal is to not pay out benefits. UNUM customer service, disability, critical illness, supervisor, enrollment, and management departments are all rude. Yes, we have called every single department listed above. Tonight a disability rep scoffed at us, put us on hold only to return to the call with more attitude. UNUM employees do not follow-up and no one knows what they are doing. Being escalated to a supervisor or manager is like pulling hair out because they don't want to take calls. It took getting the insurance broker involved to resolve one of the many issues after 4 months of battling UNUM. HR got involved and was also mistreated by the reps. I don't know how selective they are in hiring their employees, but they are the meanest people I've talked to. I also urge anyone calling UNUM to record your phone calls. I don't know how this insurance company still has clients. Thank God my husband's employer left UNUM for 2024 elective benefits. UNUM will take premiums from you, but will refuse to pay out benefits owed during your time of need and hardship. My husband's illnesses were not light illnesses. I almost lost him twice this year, and any call with UNUM was like talking to the meanest person ever. I've never left a review like this before, but this insurance company is the worst. I feel sorry for anyone who is paying a premium to UNUM because you won't get anything out of it."
"Absolute nightmare. Closed my claim because I didn't have necessary paperwork in...except they never asked for the paperwork from me or my employer. Then when I try and call I get a phone tree that says I don't an active claim so it hangs up on me. Run."
"Literally the worst customer service on earth. Long holds, no one knows what’s going on. They tell you a supervisor will call you back but never does. You can email, upload to the website and the app and still they lose everything. Most times you get transferred to at least 10 ppl but in the end your claims specialist isn’t ever available."
"If I could give this company zero stars I would!! I had a C-section on Aug 3 and have received ZERO CORRESPONDENCE from my agent! I have called several times and have left 4 different voicemails. I then finally received one payment and thought things were fine. Then again no payments so I called FINALLY was able to speak to a real person who tells me that my checks are coming in the mail. I said “why when the last one was direct deposit?” She couldn’t tell me. It is now October 6 and my two paper checks (that supposedly have been cut and mailed weeks and weeks ago) have still not be received, which makes zero sense to me! This entire experience has been TERRIBLE! I need this money to pay my bills while I’ve been out of work, I am due to go back in 2 weeks and have only received 1 payment! ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! I feel horrible for anyone who has to deal with this awful company in the future!!!"
