Reviews of Twin Cities Birth Center
"I was so pleased with the quality of care at TCBC. They took care of me at all milestones of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. I am so thankful for their compassion, expertise, and outlook on providing natural and holistic attention to me and my baby. All of the midwives were exceptional, and really seemed invested in getting to know me and my ideal birth experience. When my son arrived, I was never in doubt that I was in good hands. Although the entire care team was exceptional, Marta, Jessica, and Taylor in particular were the best providers I could have asked for. Although this was my first birth at TCBC, it was my second birth center-style birth; the difference between this one and my last one was significant. I strongly recommend TCBC (and their doula internship program!) to any mamas-to-be."
"I never thought I would be writing a review like this. I truly believe birth is a natural process and support midwives, doulas, birth centers, and home births. I want to support the community of birth workers and the expectant families they serve. Part of that is ensuring that all birth workers and facilities are held accountable to provide the best care to mothers, babies, and families that put their trust in that care. Based on the experiences I had during my two births (April 2020 and September 2023) at Twin Cities Birth Center I believe the practices and protocols they employ, particularly in emergency situations, can cause harm. The midwives currently employed by TCBC do not seem to have the expertise and training I expect from how the birth center presents itself. I hope that by speaking about my experience Amy Johnson-Grass chooses to take the time to reflect and improve upon the practices at TCBC. Expectant families deserve that as they place their trust in the care sold by TCBC. My experience at both births was that the midwife care during the actual birth was very hands off and my births were largely unsupported by the staff midwife until it came time to push. Our prenatal care had felt excellent during my first pregnancy and though we were surprised we didn’t receive the care we expected during our daughter’s birth, we reconciled our concerns in that her birth occurred during the beginning of the pandemic when everyone was doing the best they could in an unprecedented time. When I chose to go back to TCBC for my second pregnancy I was surprised to see that only 2 of the midwives I knew from my previous birth were still there, no on-site lactation consultant and the community support and classes appeared to be gone or drastically downsized. We couldn’t help but wonder if something else was happening to push the midwives and other team members we previously knew out. But we also considered that all businesses experienced changes and turn over coming out of the pandemic. I still wanted the birthing space and promised care despite the doubts I felt. To counter the doubts I had extensive conversations about my concerns during my first birth and called out when the quality of prenatal care and expertise of the midwives I met with fell short of my expectations. During these conversations I received reassurances that they were taking my concerns seriously and that this time would be different. It wasn’t. The negligent care and lack of clear protocol for postpartum hemorrhage and a retained placenta almost cost me my life. Amy Johnson-Grass and the other staff midwife did not call for EMS until 1 hr after the birth of my son despite it being clear I was hemorrhaging and had a retained placenta within minutes after my son’s birth. The actions taken at TCBC were clumsy and slow, causing me to loose far more blood (>2800ccs at TCBC and a total of 3800ccs before the bleeding was stopped at United) than I would have had proper procedures been followed. Our doctor at United was frustrated that I had been brought to the hospital for emergency medical care far too late, almost too late for him to provide the life-saving medical care I needed. United staff were clear that this was not the first time TCBC had sent birthing people or babies to United for emergency care far too late. I don’t blame anyone for the fact that I experienced a retained placenta; it is a rare but known complication after birth that has known safe and effective protocols to save the blood and life of the birthing person. I do find the lack of protocol that the midwives and birth assistant present at my birth at TCBC irresponsible, threatening to my life and potentially other mothers who may face complications in birth. I am haunted that the lack of protocol and time-wasting choices made by TCBC in the face of my retained placenta and hemorrhage nearly cost me my life and the ability to raise children.TCBC must review their protocols and practices to actually provide the level of care and expertise to expectant families that they promise on the tour."
"We chose TCBC for the pregnancy and birth of our first child and could not be more happy that we did. Longer appointment times allowed us to ask all of our first-time parent questions and feel confident that we were making the best informed choices for our family. We were able to meet each of the midwives during prenatal visits so they were all familiar faces when it came time for labor and birth. The labor and birth process was incredible. I felt supported, heard, and confident that they knew my birth plan and would do what they could to facilitate it. I felt safe the whole way through labor and was able to deliver our baby in the water birth tub which was what I had hoped for. The birth suites themselves are spacious, homey, and calm. My husband and our families whom we shared pictures with were blown away by how serene the birth space looked. For postpartum care, we were able to stay a few hours to be checked-up on, and then went home that same night. Sleeping in our own bed after laboring all day was absolutely perfect and such a gift. Lastly, having 24/7 access to be able to call the midwives and speak directly to a provider was so reassuring and we were able to meet with a lactation consultant multiple times in the first weeks to make sure that we were confident in our plan to feed our baby. Overall, I cannot recommend the care here enough. They have informational tours that I would recommend anyone take just to talk about your health history, whether a birth center is the right fit for you, and what care at a birth center looks like compared to a hospital."
"I cannot say enough good things about my experiences with Health Foundations! The midwives and the staff have been so kind supportive and caring from the time we walked in the doors for the first time in 2015. Looking back I cannot imagine having my babies anywhere else. I love that they have such an emphasis on educating moms (both first time moms and veterans) about the birthing process and what to expect throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery AND new life with the beautiful person that you bring home. This is something that we truly value in my family and are so grateful to have found here. We also hired our doula through the doula internship program they have available. It was so nice to build a birth team of people that we all there to help and support us in this incredible life changing event. We had such a great connection with her that we had her again for our second birth as well. Our birth experience was a little different between our two kids. With our oldest, Ronin, we went into labor the day after his original due date. Spent the day tracking the contractions at home and went into the birth center once they were strong enough. We were able to have a water birth and have no interventions or pain killers. Looking back it is so empowering! With our second things did not go as smoothly. Our little one went up to 42 weeks and 1 day, despite chiropractic, acupuncture, Cook's catheter, herbal induction, and every position exercise. While we ended up having to go to the hospital for our little miss Opal to be born I was SO GRATEFUL to have our midwife, Catherine, and our doula there through the whole process. After seeing both sides of the process I am so grateful for the education PRIOR to the "OMG THIS BABY IS COMING OUT AND YOU WANT ME NOT TO PUSH!" part of her labor. Thanks to Catherine's calm demeanor and sure thinking we were still able to have Opal vaginally after what they thought was a surprise breach situation (she was chin up not chin down- nose first). As I said, I cannot say enough good things about this birth center and highly recommend Health Foundations to every expecting mom that I know!"
