"Dishonesty and disappointment are 2 words that sum up my experience with Magness Auto Body. In August, my car was backed into and luckily the person was honest and reported the damage to insurance. Insurance awarded me around 4 thousand dollars after the assessor performed an evaluation. In their quote, the rear passenger door was to be replaced and all molding to be removed, including roof racks. When you receive insurance money to fix your car you have a couple options 1) do you fix it as it was before, 2) do you not fix it, 3) or do you fix some of it. I decided to fix some of it so I went around getting quotes from different body shops and Magness gave me the best quote. Scott said "$675.00." I had bought a truck from the shop many years ago and had a good experience so I said "let's do it." I dropped off my car a couple days later and told the insurance agent that I needed a rental car for a couple days. The agent called Scott to confirm. I later found out that when Scott spoke to the agent, Scott asked to be faxed the estimate from the appraiser. Here is where it all gets sticky. I was contacted 2 days in a row by Scott that the car was ready for pick up. I was pleasantly surprised it was ready in a 1/3 the time but I was also curious why he was so eager for me to come get it. When I got to the shop my car was on the rack and Scott showed me the repairs. All in all, this is exactly the job I was looking for. I wanted a budget job and just wanted my car to be presentable. I know body work and I noticed the over spray on the roof rack, skirt molding, bumper guard and I noticed the sand paper feeling of the clear coat under the door handles. Scott did not take off any molding, which was expected. The paint was a good match but there were some streak imperfections on the passenger door when it was blended. We went back to the desk and I took out my credit card, ready to pay. Scott handed me the invoice and the price was $2,700.00! I was taken back. "Scott this it not what we agreed upon." Scott responded saying that I was getting too much money from insurance and it was not fair to the insurance company and he was owed some of that money. I said "Scott it is none of your business what I get from anyone. I came here asking for a quote and you gave me one. It is my prerogative to fix my car, not fix my car, or get a minimal job. I came here for a minimal job." Things quickly escalated. Scott lowered the $2,800.00 to $2,200.00 and I still refused. After threatening legal action, Scott angrily conceded. People who do business like Scott are not people I would like to work with. I wanted a minimal job, I knew Scott would not do the prep and I knew he would cut corners and I DID NOT MIND ONE BIT. What I minded was a price change that had nothing to do with any extra work he did but had to do with getting money he thought he deserved. I told Scott if the price changes at any time, he should have called me to let me know. He never did. He just changed his price at the check out desk. This exact method of behaving is predatory and will fool some people who are too timid to stand up for what is right. Avoid this shop unless you are willing to deal with these sort of incidents."
"Only use this guy for extremely light work. You can save money but expect a half ass job and poor time management. He had my car for over 2 months and he had it because I had to take it back because he didn’t repair my strut correctly and charged me for it. Was it worth the couple hundred bucks I saved? HELL NO! And also he will lie to your face. Very unprofessional."
"Magness does amazing custom work! Their paint jobs are fantastic and customer service is great too. Great for the average paint job, touch up or even show cars. Their work is impeccable."
"I saved $500 coming to the body shop. But the job took twice as long as promised. And the paint job wasn't as good as expected. There were a few chips where you could see the previous color of the paint on my car. The door handles feel very rough as if they missed the clear coat all together on the underneath side. Also they never did get the inside of the paneling on the door put back correctly even after they admitted they did it incorrectly and they fixed it it never did look right again. They also had a very fine residue all over the inside of my car I had to take it to the carwash and use wipes to clean out the car and vacuum out this residue it was a mess. Also about the biggest frustration here was that I handed them a keyless entry key and they trying to hand me a regular key that they got made and told me this is the only key I handed them. When in fact the problem was is that they lost my keyless entry key and had to get a locksmith to make a spare key. They were just going to give me the spare key and keep my keyless entry key which is priced at $300. So I took my keyless entry key and try to start the car and it wouldn't start. Then they told me I can drive 35 miles to go to the locksmith and he would fix your key for free. But the problem is is that my husband's key won't work at all now. Was all of this worth saving $500? During this time I had to rent a car in which they agreed to pay for. Which was any of the day's over the time they promised for the car to be ready. But it was a big hassle between the car rental place and the auto body shop."
"Had some severe damage to my rear bumper, trunk pressed in a few inches, left tail light assembly cracked. Scott fixed it all for way less than what the insurance company estimated it at--&, according to what everyone who referred me to Magness says--way less than any shop in Fayetteville would. He even finished it on a Saturday because my insurance company delayed the job for days by failing to get an adjustor out to factor in the trunk/hatch damage. Saved me a lot of money & even compensated for someone else's poor service."
