Reviews of Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital
"I was sent here about eight years ago and still to this day I am traumatized about the things that happened to me here. I was verbally abused. I was not allowed to go outside the entire time I stayed despite there being a playground and areas for us to go outside, nor were any of the other people in my unit allowed to go outside the whole time I stayed. I was only allowed one phone call right before I left the facility, and it was to call home. In the group activities we were forced to open up about traumatizing experiences and if we didn’t we were sent to our rooms with no contact with anyone and sometimes not allowed to eat until the next day. I was given meds that I had no idea what they were, I was only taking birth control upon coming to Riverview. I had to take several medications at this facility without talking to a doctor, that made me feel very weird while I was not told what they were. I urinated myself one night because of the medication and was forced to wear paper clothes for three days because they would not let me wash the only pair of pants that they had allowed me to wear from what my mom had brought me. I had people come into my room at random times throughout the night and wake me up at 2, 3, 4am to draw blood, give me more medication or to ask me odd questions. I wasn’t given soap when I took showers or toothpaste when I brushed my teeth, and being in a mixed unit kids would go into each others showers and have sex with each other. Kids would have mental break downs at the table in the main room where we all stayed and staff would only yell at them and yell at other patients to not talk to them or they would be in trouble. The staff would never help you and if anything they would make every situation worse. It was best not to talk to the staff if at all possible. I was told I was going to have a therapist and a doctor contact me the day I arrived and wasn’t contacted by either of them, only a therapist the day that I had left, three months later. I was placed in a class for schooling that was three grades above my grade level before coming to this place. After being out of this place for eight years there are a lot of things I don’t remember. But the things I do remember still traumatize me to this day nearly everyday. Do NOT send your children or anyone you care about here. They will not receive the help or care they deserve."
"I have been working here for three years and have witnessed amazing changes in several patients. The therapeutic improvements are incredible and are getting better everyday. There are always challenges, but this team really has a passion for the work."
"Riverview has genuinely helped me so much. I had five suicide attempts under my belt before I went, everything changed when I did. I got a closer relationship with my parents and became a kinder person, it also helped me find Christ. I definitely recommend, I love this place ♥️✝️"
"My elderly father with dementia was sent here after we were concerned he would hurt himself or our mother. He was sent by UT Health Center here for behavioral health care. Despite many calls to try and speak with his therapist, Dr., or even a case manager to keep us updated on how he was doing we couldn't get through to anyone by phone. We ended up driving the 3 hours to try and speak with someone in person, we were told the therapist and doctor would call and speak with us regarding his treatment plan and assured that before he was discharged there would be a person in communication with us prior to discharge to help set up outpatient services and help to get him diagnosed. We received almost zero communication until the day they discharged him... without any notice. He returned home with the same behavior. I am leaving this review because It was almost impossible to get through on the phone and actually speak with someone... and if by chance you could speak with someone in the office, they would promise a call back but never followed through. I will also note I've tried to speak with administration concerning this however received no call back. The only positive thing I can report is that my dad told us he was treated well by staff."
"I want to leave this review so parents out there thinking of sending their kids here can have a more well painted picture. During my time at Riverview I was harassed multiple times. I had an older patient there make comments about my weight and make up songs about my body while staff laughed with her. I had multiple male patients there harass me and staff did nothing about it. I was refused phone calls home as well as water when I was thirsty. I have severe anaphylaxis was having an allergic reaction and asked for Benadryl and was told I was being dramatic. I was put on meds that made me pass out in the halls and faint randomly and staff still insisted I took them. Hunter, The group “therapist” there publicly called me out in group by telling everyone there something my father had privately disclosed to him. When I started crying hunter had no apologies to offer. The beds are rock hard, I lost 10 pounds during my treatment because the food was so gross as well. If you’re considering this facility think again. Riverview deeply scarred me and your children and loved ones will likely be scarred by this facility too."
