"We are Canadian citizens, snowbirds, who owned a home in the USA for a number of years, which we recently sold. We retained the tax services of Clint Gould, CPA to help with our US taxes on the sale. On first meeting Clint, we presented him with a copy of the buy/sale realty agreement and the accompanying escrow document. The documents showed a 15% firpta withhold. Clint commented that the buyer decides whether the firpta withhold is 10% or 15%. He said that he couldn't promise success, but that he would contact the buyer's agent, and try to get the first withhold down to 10%.This he did, successfully---our withhold was reduced to 10%. After the end of the year, Clint completed our Federal IRS and state tax returns.
