"During my initial consultation with Dr Orton he recommended that I get a PET scan (I found out later from my urologist that I didn't need a PET scan, but decided to get one anyway because I had been told my co-pay was only $130). Dr Orton would have known that I didn't need a PET scan as he had all my records from my urologist, but he recommend I get one anyway. I asked him what a PET scan would cost with my insurance and he told me his staff would tell me. They said my co-pay was $130 so I decided to get it. After the scan had been done I got a bill from his office for $1080 for the scan. It turned out my actual co-pay for the scan was $1210 (10X more than what I had been told). When I called and talked to the office manger about this discrepancy she admitted to me that they were aware of what the actual co-pay was but they had not decided to inform patients of this at this time, but she said that might change because they have had to deal with so many complaints. I can only conclude that they don't tell patients the actual cost because they own the machine used for these PET scans and make thousands of dollars on each scan, and they know if patients knew the true cost many would not have the scan done. Knowing that I didn't really need a PET scan, I certainly wouldn't have had it done if I had been told the actual cost. It's too late for me, but I am writing this to warn others who have UHC Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance that a PET scan at this facility will cost you a $1210 co-pay, not $130 as they will tell you."
