About the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve Visitor Center
The Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve Visitor Center is located at 150 Blue Heaven Road in Patagonia, Arizona. Situated in a lush floodplain valley between the Patagonia and Santa Rita Mountains, the preserve boasts some of the richest remaining riparian habitat in southeastern Arizona. This 873-acre site is home to a diverse array of species, from endangered fish to butterflies and birds.
The preserve protects a rare Fremont cottonwood-Goodding willow riparian forest, with some of the largest and oldest cottonwood trees in the country. Remnant wetlands, or cienegas, can also be found here, along with a variety of rare and sensitive plant species.
Visitors can explore the preserve on a one-mile-long trail that connects to the Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. The Visitor Center offers interpretive exhibits and information about the preserve and its wildlife.
Group visits require prior arrangements, and admission fees support conservation projects across southeastern Arizona. Nature walks are offered on an irregular basis, and volunteers are welcome to help with various tasks at the preserve.
Whether you're a birdwatcher, nature enthusiast, or simply looking to experience the beauty of Arizona's natural landscapes, the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve Visitor Center is a must-visit destination.

Reviews of Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve Visitor Center
"Beautiful hike and we had great luck viewing wildlife: had Javelina on the path in front of us, saw several Coues White-tailed deer, and a Peregrine falcon in a tree that watched our approach then flew away. Beautiful!! The earthy smell all around us was wonderful, as were the changing yellow leaves on some of the trees. The Fremont Cottonwood trees were amazing with their huge, wide trunks!! The volunteers were helpful with tips for the hike and explaining the map we got to take with us. Well worth the $8 entrance fee!"
"Very friendly staff. Trail signage throughout the preserve is clear and trails are easy walks. A must-stop spot for anyone birding their way through southeast Arizona."
"This is the most beautiful drive from Tucson (approx. 60 or so miles). Primarily ranches along the way. The little town of Patagonia is an absolute gem. We also stopped quickly in Sonoita."
"This center is responsible for getting me to fall in love with the sky islands!! I just so enjoy walking their pleasant trails and have had some fun experiences. However, it pains me greatly that they have chosen to be closed last and now this year too. What a waste and shame!!!! Please open your center and trails so that others can partake in the wonders here!!!"
