Reviews of Palo Verde Behavioral Health
"My child has been here for over a week now. I had a concern about a medication which I requested for Dr helms to call me back to discuss my concern, I have yet to hear back from him and its been almost a week. Yet he is wanting to discharge my child without addressing my concern."
"Terrible. I was by accident petitioned by them to stay there even though I went there voluntary to get assessed to begin with, like they have the petition paper ready to go before I went in (as I was recommended by a school counselor), so I was falsely documented. I was in there for a week until they finally wrote a discharge paper after being "treated". I had to play their game. As I did not had any insurance, they promised they will set up a social worker work with me to sign up for AHCCSS. They didn't, and week later billed me $15000 for unwanted week of stay there. As soon as I got out, I tried to apply AHCCSS my own, but I was told by them that Palo Verde should have put me on "pending AHCCSS" during the stay otherwise they could not cover the bill prior to application. I was 18, freshmen in college at the time. I am not native in English and Palo Verde threatened me to sign whatever papers during assessment without my knowledge and I was not allowed to leave. Total scam. I am Autistic and diagnosed as depression previously to the visit, and they did not just disrespected my disability, treated me like a bad child for not understanding all their "schedule" set like a prison. I also had serious gastric ulcer and gallbladder disease at the time with intolerable pain, and they will not allow me to lay down and rest anywhere even though I specifically told them my diagnosis and medications, they even discontinued my medication. First thing they feed me was pizza and fries (after telling them my dietary need), and they also gave me Insures lying to me they are dairy-free while I told them I am allergic to milk. I also have had endometriosis with severe menorrhagia taking oral contraception to control the bleeding, and they discontinued my pill of course so that I would feel worse and bleed even more. They did not even allow me to bring my own napkins but would only have crappy napkin/tampon that was not enough to hold my blood. They did not just medically neglect me but medically tortured me. Even though I specifically told them I have severe sensitivity issues due to Autism, they put me all day long, with pain, in small chamber full of people with loud TV on(they will continuously put on loud movies like "Interception" or random boxing documentary of course to trigger those PTSD patients). They drugged all of us with Trazodone as the light is fully on during the night and the noise level is horrible. They also increased my dosage without my knowledge, while I told them I was keeping the dosage as it is to watch my GI issues. Old fashioned mental health institute and does not give any right and only meant to punish patients with mental difficulties treating us like criminals. While I was completely harmless depressed person, I was put in the same unit as patients who had idealization to harm others and substance abuser. I did not feel safe. You can rarely see a doctor or social worker. If I try to ask a nurse anything, they say "maybe the doctor will come tomorrow" and I was only able to meet social worker twice during week of stay. This place made both my physical and mental health worsened as I soon I got out, I had abdominal surgery due to worsened GI issues and traumatized me that I developed PTSD symptoms. Do not send your family or children in there, only if you want to make things worse for them and only to abandon them. You will not get any human rights there."
"Not the worst place around (the options in Tucson are lacking in both quality and quantity) but not great. It's definitely better than nothing if your kid is at CRC and has to be placed somewhere, but they're clearly just going through the motions---starting with having you sign forms upon both admission and discharge stating that they've had discussed topics and given you resources whether or not they actually have to remove any liability from themselves in the likely case that there are issues. The good news is that you can make notes on the paperwork if needed saying they didn't go over it, and since they don't actually look at it, they don't question it. You can obviously try asking questions or getting them to actually go over what they're stating they went over on the paperwork, but expect them to get huffy and act like they have somewhere else to be if you do. The medication management is hit or miss, and they may or may not inform parents of changes or get consent for changes. They're not typically keeping patients long enough to monitor if any of the medications are effective or if there are any side effects other than adverse reactions. The main psychiatrist seems well-intentioned but definitely has quite the ego, has a weird chip on his shoulder about nurse practitioners, and will make referrals to community psychiatrists based on who he's buddies with from college and not who gets the best results or patient feedback. Most of the staff seems overworked and burnt out and just want to get the kids in, check the boxes to cya, then dump them back into the same situation overseen by overworked and burnt out parents without anything actually being resolved. I do have to say that the case manager was great and really did everything in her power to advocate for patients. Most of the techs seemed pretty nice and relatively helpful too but most don't seem to have any training with mental health or children or behavior management and are just kind of cool high school babysitter level, so the kids seem to like most of them. As mentioned in another review, bad behavior of one or a couple kids in a behavioral health facility seems to result in punishment and lock down for the entire unit. They're not kept sufficiently occupied or provided with many good options to prevent spiraling in teens who are there for mental health issues. Some of the topics for group are helpful, but then some are like "doing taxes," which is not terrible but not especially helpful for most teens, much less a one-time lesson while they're in a facility because they're already so overwhelmed and stressed and hopeless... Also tried getting into the IOP program here and could never get a call back to even get that started, so can't speak on the quality of that program."
"I have never felt so disappointed, rejected and suicidal in my life. First I made an appointment and upon arrival I was told that they don't take appointments. The receptionist was very cold and somewhat passive aggressive if you ask me. It was an hour and a half of waiting with my wife sitting waiting in the reception area. They finally came in and rejected me due to my oxygen prescription, they said it was a ligature risk. You don't have to worry about me recommending anyone to your facility even if they are in crisis because I will never refer anyone to your facility. Did I say I was disappointed?"
"If you expect any form of accommodation, this is not the place for you. They do nothing to help patients feel safe and some of the staff will abuse their power by being lazy and refusing services that they won’t allow us to do ourselves. Supposed to have group therapy several times a day but most of the days I was in, there would be one group and they’d keep the phones shut off for “group” where we’d sit by ourselves in the day room for hours. Staff members there would pick fights with patients and treat them like dogs knowing that any retaliation meant getting petitioned to stay in longer. Couldn’t reach the patient advocacy center during my time there. Took them seven hours to intake me, leaving me in the intake room away from friends, family, and phone access for a majority of the hours. Expected me to be in my right mind signing papers at midnight, during a mentally unstable moment without fully explaining any of the details of the paperwork to me or my support system. Wouldn’t give me back one of my prescriptions when I left and destroyed it. When I asked to talk to the doctor about the reason behind destroying one of my prescribed medications from another doctor, he refused to see me. You see a psychiatrist for maybe ten minutes in the morning every morning and that’s it. You aren’t allowed to talk about trauma at all and the staff won’t even use your preferred name regardless the number of times you correct them. Megan was the only staff person that made this place manageable. Every one else treated patients like dogs. They even brought high acuity patients in to hold them in the low acuity area causing several panic attacks among patients due to the amount of screaming, banging, fighting, and threats from the high acuity patients. No communication between staff and asking the same question to multiple people will get you multiple different answers and leave you more confused as to what’s going on. Not that they bother to tell you what’s happening or going to happen unless you specifically dig for the answer. They also don’t tell you that they don’t discharge on weekends so I stayed in several days longer than they told me I would. This place takes advantage of how little power the patients have and makes you feel worse for coming in when you’re already in an unstable state. Oh, forgot to mention, the doctor can petition a patient to stay in longer without warning or even talking to the patient about it and that did happen to a patient while I was there."
