About the Armory Park
Armory Park, located at 222 South 5th Avenue in Tucson, Arizona, is a historic park and tourist attraction spanning 4 acres in Ward 6. The park holds significant historical value as it was the site where Col. Cooke and his troops raised the first American flag in Tucson during their 2,000 mile infantry march to the Pacific coast on December 16, 1876.
In June 13, 1937, the erection of the park was supervised by the M-Men and Gleaner Girls of the Central Arizona District of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The park also houses the Tucson Arizona World War II Memorial, honoring service members from Tucson and Pima County who sacrificed their lives during the global conflict. The Memorial, dedicated on November 11, 2013, features a compass symbolizing the war fought from every direction across the globe.
The history of Armory Park dates back to the establishment of Camp Lowell in 1866 by the U.S. Army, recognizing the strategic military importance of Tucson. The camp provided military protection and financial benefits to the residents of Tucson until it was moved and renamed Fort Lowell in 1879. In 1913, a portion of the former Camp Lowell site was deeded to the state for the construction of the first armory in Arizona, which opened in 1914 within what is now Armory Park. The masonry structure with castle-like towers was used for military drills, basketball practice, Boy Scout camporees, and even dances for soldiers during World War II.
Although the original armory building was demolished in 1975, Armory Park continues to be a place of historical significance and remembrance for all who visit.

Reviews of Armory Park
"It St. Patrick's day. The festival was fun. I got the Corned Beef & Cabbage, which was so awesome. The music & dancers were great."
"Much cleaner and neater now and a very nice place to just kick it and enjoy some free time! This is a really nice asset of downtown Tucson, and this park has come quite a long way recently, that's for sure! It's really nice to see downtown Tucson coming back, and I hope this trend is contagious!"
"This is a nice park to walk around and see some of the memorials for soldiers loss. It is also a sizable homeless encampment and there may be numerous homeless individuals sleeping and/or passed out in this area. I probably wouldn't hang out here with my family."
"It allows me to sit down and unwind on my walk home after work. There is a very cool WWII monument. A Carnegie Library is there which is now a children's museum. There is one of my favorite installations in Tucson. An awesome statue installation of a Griffen called Toby by a well known artist. It's a nice place to have a picnic or just have lunch if you work downtown. Enjoy!"
"It’s a nice little park to go have a lunch at. Some people complain about the homeless gathering at spots like this and annoying them. I have to admit I do get annoyed at times as well but we have to put ourselves in their shoes and only then can we understand. If I were homeless and desperate I would probably seek out locations like this as well. It’s an unfortunate situation but we have to accept it."
