Reviews of Macayo's Mexican Food
"This will be my last visit to this location. Went in last night at 5:15 with a party of four. My date and I arrived first. We asked the hostess for a table, and she pointed to a booth being cleaned and said "They're just cleaning that table and you'll be seated." (We are the only people waiting). A lady walks in after us and asks for a table of 6. Her party walks in after her in two groups. The hostess sees the table is clean, grabs some menus and....walks the table of 6 back to our booth. She walks back t her stand, and just stands there, doing nothing. We are literally 10 feet away, directly in her line of sight. I walk up and ask "Are we going to be seated? That was supposed to be our booth?" She stares at me and says "It depends if there are any tables or booths available." I ask her "Do you remember me? We walked in before that group of 6, you told us the booth was being cleaned and we'd be seated, and then you sat that group of 6." She just stared at me. It was funny, and a bit sad, but oh well. Then we were seated, told they've been out of green corn tamale bites for a few days after ordering them (that's on the manager). Our waitress was the bartender, who did her best, but just had too much volume. We ordered 3 chimichangas, they all came out cooked completely differently, and the waitress never stopped by the rest of the meal. We were all out of water long before we were done eating. Food took about 25 minutes to come out. Obvious lack of management at this restaurant, and the entire experience was bizarre. I write this review in the hopes that this Macayo's is closed up and gone from this location before 2024 is open, although I don't think my review is necessary for that to happen. Macayo's was once a great restaurant chain (the Mesa location is still solid) but this place needs to drastically change, or close, and the reviews reflect that."
"Surprised at reviews. Went on a Thursday night , not too busy. Food was served quick and hot, cocktails fairly priced and Texas Margarita was strong. Server was a nice guy, restaurant was clean."
"I am a longtime Macayo's customer, originally frequenting the first location in downtown Phoenix, decades ago. Since moving back to AZ, I've had a few occasions to go back to my favorite Mexican restaurant. It's still a great place but since the new ownership that took over many years ago, the menu is honestly, not as good. That's why I only give 4 stars on the food. Why they would get rid of one of their signature dishes, green corn tamales, and make them only deep fried appetizers, is beyond me. Most of the other items, like great chimis, are still there to enjoy. Don't get me wrong, it's still an excellent restaurant choice overall. It would be nice to see a throwback menu, or some occasional event, serving the recipes they used to sell proudly to the public."
"The creators of the Chimichanga. We used to dine at the original Macayos on Central Avenue. This was very nostalgic. The original chimichangas were so good and flavorful. Felix kept checking on us he was so friendly. I will dine here again. Thanks for the veterans chimi for my hubby. They also offer merch."
"Food was good, check out the pics. We both had chimichangas for Veterans Day, one shredded beef the other carnitas. Also had margarita flights, I recommend the passion fruit. Dessert was Enchiladas Dulce, very very good."
