"As a logger and an airline pilot, I think people need to recognize the heroics of Randy’s actions on April 22, 2019. He downplays the extreme danger of climbing underneath a crashed aircraft precariously held aloft by damaged tree limbs. I have climbed and topped many a tree and the thought of doing what Randy did is nothing short of superhero stuff. The tree moves when you climb it, or when the wind blows, or when you cut big limbs off on the way up. The saw makes so much noise you will never hear or see the aircraft crashing down on top of you. The rescue probably took place in near darkness as it was getting late when distress call went out over Guard frequency. Getting to the aircraft in the tree would be difficult as branches would be broken, bent, and bowed. Securing the aircraft to the tree without further endangering yourself would be near impossible. Getting the pilot out without disturbing the balance of the aircraft in its resting place would be very risky. Sharp metal of bent aircraft frame, hot engine parts, potential fire, all make short work of the rope materials holding Randy, the pilot, and the airplane to the tree. I’m sure there were numerous other challenges to this rescue that Randy could better describe, but he said: “Glad I was there to help”. Randy’s quick thinking, technical skill, and total disregard for his own safety are in keeping with the highest traditions of America’s heroes...somebody give this guy a medal!"
