About the Monroe Street Bridge
The Monroe Street Bridge, located at 218 North Monroe Street in Spokane, Washington, is a historic tourist attraction that has played a crucial role in the development of the city. This iconic bridge, the third to be built on this site, spans the Spokane River and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
The first Monroe Street Bridge, constructed of wood, was built in the early days of Spokane's establishment. It was soon replaced by a steel bridge in 1890, which was a significant improvement in terms of modernity and functionality. However, the steel bridge faced issues with vibrations and safety concerns, leading to its eventual collapse in 1910.
The current Monroe Street Bridge, designed by Spokane City Engineer John Chester Ralston and renowned architects Kirtland K. Cutter and Karl G. Malmgren, opened in 1911 and is the world's largest concrete arch-bridge. Despite facing challenges during construction, including severe weather conditions and accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities, the bridge stands as a testament to the city's resilience and ingenuity.
Over the years, the Monroe Street Bridge has undergone reconstruction and preservation efforts to maintain its historical significance and structural integrity. The removal of a railroad bridge that once crossed over it has restored the bridge to its original grandeur, allowing visitors to admire its unique architectural features such as buffalo skulls, wagon wheels, and chain handrails that reflect the pioneer spirit of Spokane's early settlers.
Today, the Monroe Street Bridge continues to be a symbol of Spokane's rich history and serves as a beloved landmark for both locals and tourists alike. Visitors can walk or drive across the bridge, taking in panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscape while appreciating the legacy of this iconic structure.
