About the Hells Gate State Park
Hells Gate State Park, located at 5100 Hells Gate Road in Lewiston, Idaho, is a stunning park and tourist attraction with a rich history. The park sits on the river bottom left over from the ice age floods, with basaltic columns from the Pomona flows dating back 14 million years. Once the site of a Nez Perce Village, the park now offers a range of activities including jet boat rides up the Snake River, fishing for steelhead, picnicking, and biking on the Clearwater and Snake River trail.
Campers can enjoy quiet and grassy campsites along the Snake River, with the park being situated at the lowest elevation in Idaho. The warm weather in the area has earned Lewiston the nickname of Idaho's Banana Belt. Nearby attractions include the Nez Perce National Historic Park, showcasing the traditional life of the Nez Perce people, and the Jack O’Conner Hunting Heritage and Education Center, displaying hunting trophies and telling the story of America's hunting heritage.
Hells Gate State Park is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, closed on major holidays. Day-use locations within the park are open from 7 am to 10 pm. Visitors can contact the park at (208) 799-5015 for more information.

Reviews of Hells Gate State Park
"Our campsite was a nice pull thru #A26. Very pretty and quiet place by the river. My only negative feedback is that the bike/walking trail into town was covered with thorns that punctured our bike tires on three consecutive rides."
"Large spaced out sites. River in the back. Deer and turkey running around. Lady at check in was very nice. Fished in marina off the rock and got a nice smallie."
"We really enjoyed hells gate state park. The roads to the park and inside the park are completely paved, so its very easy to drive. The layout of the loops was also easy to drive and access your spot, we pull a 35 ft fifthwheel and didn't have any trouble maneuvering it. The sites themselves have lots of room to spread out so it did not feel cramped. This is a popular park so if you want peace and quiet know what time of year it is and go during the quieter seasons. This is an excellent family park with a nice paved biking/walking trail so my 2 yo and 4 yo had an easy time biking as well as playing on the little swim beach. The park itself was very clean when we visited, the bathrooms were clean as well as the showers. It seemed like most campers did a good job cleaning up as well. Only complaint? Don't show up early. The staff was very rude at check in, and even if your site is empty won't let you check in early. So despite kiddos needing naps, temps being in the hundreds, and having traveled hours, you'll have to entertain yourself with no hope of cooling down your trailer until precisely 2pm."
"Pretty, quiet, lots of rv camping and cabins. Over all a really nice place to camp. We got there right before the check in closed for the day and got a spot no problem. The lady at the counter was extremely nice and pleasant and let us know dogs were allowed in the buildings too as long as leashed and cleaned up after which was great information. The water was nice. Was a little concerning there was a guy fishing right in the middle of the buoy area where lots of kids were swimming though. The bathrooms were clean and has a dump RV station and d unable water."
"Such a nice, peaceful State Park. The day use beach is so nice. It's a safe stretch of beach. In the campground there are huge trees for shade. So camping in the 100° temperature is actually bearable without electricity - tent camping at its finest. There are large green grassy areas to run and play games. The roads are perfect for riding bikes. There is also a paved bike/walking path throughout the park. There are also trails that you can go on. There were also bunnies, deer, and turkeys wandering thru the camp ground. There is a trail that borders the campground that horses use quite frequently and it's fun to watch them galloping by."
