Reviews of Winding Waters River Expeditions
"A multiple night guided raft trip with class 3 & 4 rapids has been on my bucket list for a few decades. We never had the time or $$ until now to say YES to a trip like this. I had a lot of worries about the trip. I wear glasses, and didn't want to lose them if I had an "out of raft experience", I'm not a camper (though I grew up camping with my parents), the agreement we signed almost frightened me out of the trip (and yes, we bought the insurance). I'm SO happy I trusted our neighbors who invited us and my long held desire to participate in one of these trips, because this was truly an experience of a lifetime. Winding Waters did a very good job of communicating next steps along the way via email once we'd registered. I found them very responsive to phone calls as well. The orientation meeting was helpful and a nice way to break the ice. The dry bags are bigger than they look! My husband was able to take his guitar and the guides took great care of all our belongings while on the water. The information on "how to be a rafter" right before we put in was critical. Because of this I knew exactly what to do when I had my dreaded "out of boat experience". If I would add anything to that information it would be: Keep yourself safe on the boat first before you try to help out someone else! -If I hadn't let go of my handholds to try to grab someone else I'd never have gone overboard. Yes, I took in some water and it was a huge adrenaline rush. But within a minute the guides and my friends had me out of the water and back in a raft. Also, didn't lose my glasses! Hell's Canyon has an amazing history nationally. I wish I had read a little more about it before the trip. Our guide Robin was a wealth of information and she guided and educated us with grace and a wonderful laugh. We saw deer, mountain goats, big horn sheep, eagles, herons and osprey. We stopped a couple of times to visit parks. We hiked to lookouts and memorials. The pacing on the water was perfect for me. Time enjoying rapids, water fights, watching each other swim rapids, ride the duckies along was all appreciated. By day three I was fully ready to just BE. Unplugging from electronics and time was a huge gift. The campsites were set up by the gear boat guides every night, so we could do whatever we needed and then settle into visiting, having a beverage, and waiting for the delicious food. Using the groover was very easy for me. The system was straight forward and comfortable. Yes, we all peed in the water along the way, no biggie. Bring one quick drying outfit. It's all you need for your time on the water. Also, the wet wipes I brought were wonderful each evening to help me transition from river to camp. I did offer $100 for a hot, wet washcloth one evening but no-one took me up on it. Yes, joking. (Mostly) Mornings we each broke down our tents and cots, packed up our dry bags and went down to breakfast. The WW coffee is DELICIOUS! The last day of the 5 day trip is a long splashy one and when your guide suggests you have your raincoat available, listen to them! The most special thing about this trip was the openness of the guides to share their lives with us. I felt so connected to each of them. WW has truly special people on their staff. Never a grumble or short word. Open, smart, warm, funny, genuine and hard working, I'll never forget any of them. If you are wondering if you should choose Winding Waters for your trip next summer I highly recommend them. Watch their videos. Look them up on Youtube for more fun videos. Say YES to sleeping on your cot under the stars. It's just magical!"
"Rockstars. Each and every member of the WWRE team was a gem. Fun. Interesting. Hardworking. While the rapids were a rush, the landscape breathtaking, the team is what made the difference. Paul and Penny, I take my hat off to you. You have hired well, trained well and just lead with love and it shows. Every detail of interacting with WWRE was professional, relaxed, pleasant and fun. From the moment you get your first email and all emails after with details of what to bring and not to bring (yes, bring everything on the list, I opted out of rain pants only and that was the only item I regret not bringing), to their briefing the day before, moments before getting on the river to every interaction on the river. Every member of the team was attentive, professional and just plain good folks to be floating down the river. I look forward to joining you again, for this trip or others. Thank you and keep it up. I highly recommend you for anyone looking for the right outfitters to float down one of the rivers you serve. Thank you, David"
"Went on the 5 day Hells Canyon trip in August 2023. Amazing---the crew, the food (really), the cots, the tents, the Dorry, the rafts....it was all spectacular! These are real pros. We got to hike daily and see sights along the way. WWRE are the best! Oh and we had great fly fishing!"
"Rafting with Winding Waters has become one of my favorite annual experiences. The guides are warm and supportive, the food is fresh and delicious, and the scenery is truly some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Traveling together as a tribe, moving along the pace of the river, is a unique way to disconnect with distractions and reconnect with nature and nourishment. Having 5 days without cell service is also a true luxury in the day and age. I find the value of these trips worth every penny."
"Aside from the amazing beauty of Hells Canyon itself, what made the trip so amazing were the guides. We felt like we were being taken care of by family. A really special group. Can't wait to be back in the county to float again."
