"I have purposely let 6 months pass since the deaths of my parents before posting my review. It is largely taken from the email I sent the owner after their deaths. Let me preface it by saying I am an allied health professional with 40+ years of experience. I visited my parents daily for the approximately 90 days they collectively resided at BrightStar Prickly Pear Memory Care Home, save a necessary break of 2 days. I owed them that much and had a good relationship with most of the young, variably experienced but kind caregivers. The best confided in me their concerns for resident care and I thank them for that. The site administrator and nurse were far too defensive to effectively communicate with. This was corroborated by other families with loved ones in residence. I truly hope things have changed for the better in 6 months but be advised. My initial tour of Prickly Pear, in retrospect, felt like a bait & switch. The flashy brochure and visit was not daily reality and I later witnessed the "staging" for family tours. Big concerns: -Cleanliness: of rooms, bathrooms, food preparation/eating areas and laundry room/laundry practices. (Clearly marked clothing frequently disappeared!) -Caregivers: often relied on residents to ask for things when they should have done the asking. Many spent far too much time on their phones and in personal conversations with other staff. My mother was kind, gracious and deeply embarrassed by needing total care near the end. All her caregivers reported to me how apologetic and profusely thankful she was for their personal care. On a scheduled visit, it was her St. Luke's Home Health P.T. (not BrightStar staff) who noted her altered mental and physical state and insisted she be transported to the ER. She was subsequently placed on hospice. Staff called me one night when my father became agitated in the days before his death to "handle" him and call hospice staff. I would expect the staff of a "care home" to make the appropriate observations/calls in both of the above situations. -Ergonomics of the building: temperature regulation was poor for the elderly and adjusted more for the staff. At one point it was unreasonably cold and caregivers were unable to adjust the thermostat without off-site help. It was impossible to push a wheelchair up to my mother's designated bathroom sink so that she could reach the faucet and basin. -Environment: music was often the staff's choice, age-inappropriate and much too loud for residents especially those struggling with swallowing, attention, etc. There was a lack of visual memory supports for memory impaired residents in what is supposed to be a "memory care" home. These supports are best practice and were completely lacking or removed even when provided by family. My father could not find the bathroom without them, was not provided a urinal in a timely manner even after much family insistence, and developed medical complications secondary to lacking or poor toileting supervision/incontinence hygiene. The relocation of him to different rooms/houses 3-4 times, due to needed pest control/fumigation, took a great toll on him after my mother's death. I know caring for senior and end of life humans is very, very hard work (I took care of them in their home until I could no longer safely do so.) but our elders deserve so much better and I found nothing "exceptional" about the care at Prickly Pear."
"Moving my husband to Bright Star Prickly Pear in Eagle, was the best decision that I ever made in regard to his Alzheimer's disease. Caring, loving staff, smaller number of patients, a cheerful home environment. Cannot say enough good things about the staff and director Jeanie. They made our journey so much easier and I never had to worry about my husband."
"I have worked for brightstar for 2 years and its been the best 2 years. I love the woek i do it is absolutely rewarding. ❤️ I love the staff! Brightstar has worked with me since the day i started. I came to work from being a stay at home mom and the transition was a little hard but they worked with me. I recommend brightstar care for your loved ones needs and employment."
"BrightStar has a family home atmosphere. Employees take time to know and fully engage with the residents and their care. Each resident has their own room. Our mom has been at BrightStar for a little over one year. She often says I like it here, everyone is always kind to me and I’m glad I live here. She feels secure which is important to us. They have game nights where they play trivia and bingo. The yards are kept up nicely with a wide variety of plants and trees. The birds and squirrels are great entertainment. There is a beautiful sunroom where we can go inside and all sit together to visit. There’s also a welcoming family room where each resident has a recliner to visit, watch TV or read."
